How to Plan the Perfect Wine Touring Experience in Canada

If you’re already imagining clinking glasses under the Okanagan sun or wandering a vineyard in Niagara with a warm breeze at your back…then guess what?

Your wine trip has already begun.

And I’m not just saying that — studies show the anticipation of a vacation can give you just as much happiness as the vacation itself.

So pour some Canadian wine, sit back, and let’s get planning. Because we get questions about wine touring every single week:

“Where should we go?”
“How many wineries per day is ideal?”
“Where should we eat? What about the best places to stay?”
“Which hidden gems should we not miss?”

And after years of touring with members (and making our own mistakes… oh boy, do we have stories), we’ve put together the ultimate guide.

🍷Step One: Choose Your Wine Region

Canada isn’t just “Okanagan or Niagara.”

It’s a treasure map of micro-regions, each with its own vibe, wines, food, and views that make you say:

“Are we seriously still in Canada?”

Let’s take a little tour, shall we?

🌄 BRITISH COLUMBIA: The Okanagan + Beyond

The Okanagan is big. Like… really big. You don’t “go wine touring in the Okanagan.” You do one sub-region at a time — unless you enjoy stress, hunger, and watching your schedule implode before lunch. (Ask me how I know.)
Let’s break it down.

Kelowna & Lake Country

This is your gateway into wine country. Rolling hills, lake views, and wineries that punch way above their weight. If you’re planning on flying in to Kelowna Airport, then there are certainly wineries within a short drive of the airport.
Some of our favourites:

Summerhill Pyramid Winery — Yes, they built an actual pyramid to age their sparkling wines. You’ve got to see it. Spiritual, quirky, and we have found some amazing and highly rated wines… this place is a vibe. They also have an on-site restaurant as well as a seasonal take out stand.

SpearHead — Top-tier Pinot Noirs, beautifully expressive Chardonnays… this is one of the most consistent, premium producers in the valley.

Gray Monk — A founder of the region, way back before wineries in the Okanagan were such a common thing. Classic BC Riesling and Pinot Gris. History + hospitality = always a winning combo.

Naramata Bench & Summerland

This is the Disneyland for adults section of the Okanagan. If you haven’t been… brace yourself - this is going to be fun!You can walk, bike, or drive from winery to winery — 30+ of them — each with killer views.

Some Naramata gems:

Da Silva — Stunning wines made by Richard Da Silva, whose family has been farming grapes in the region going back to the 1950s. Stand outs include the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Chenin Blanc. And all of the Legado series. PLUS - if you visit May to October, don’t miss The Kitchen at Da Silva: our favourite restaurant in the Okanagan.

Moraine — Amber Pratt’s wines are elegant and expressive and have won multiple awards as well as high scores from yours truly over the years. They also have a gorgeous vineyard cabin you can book and stay on site.

Hillside — This is a larger, but still independently owned winery. Winemaker Kathy Malone has many decades of experience with the Naramata Bench terroir. The skin contact Pinot Gris, the Muscal Ottonel, the Merlots…all fantastic. Also - a great restaurant on site that offers take out meals!

Tightrope — Most recently, this has been our highest rated BC winery. The Equipoise red blend, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay and Barbera (yes, Barbera!) are some of our favourites.

Tip: Stay on the Bench if you can. Wake up to vineyards. Go to bed with stars. Visit the trails, waterfalls, tunnels and trestle bridges nearby. Repeat.

South Okanagan (Okanagan Falls → Oliver → Osoyoos)

This is where the big reds live. The South Okanagan is the tip of the Sonora Desert - yes, an actual desert, in Canada! Sagebrush. Cacti. Massive flavour. People call it the Napa of the North— and they’re not wrong.

Some favourites - Kaleden & OK Falls:

Black Market — Rob & Michelle are running one of the most exciting small wineries in the country.

Meyer Family Vineyards — If you love Chardonnay or Pinot Noir… do not skip this.
Synchromesh — Rieslings that will ruin all other Rieslings for you (in the best way).

More favourites - Oliver & Osoyoos:

Maverick — Best known for their Bush Vine Syrah, bright Sauvignon Blanc, and polished red blends. Small winery, big precision.

Intersection — Their Alluvia and Silica Merlots are a masterclass in terroir. Same grape, different soils — totally different magic.

Hester Creek — One of the few places where tastings are still free. Book the premium one if you can — and don’t miss the GSM.

There’s also the District Wine Village near Oliver that has around a dozen small wineries in one place, with restaurants and very often live entertainment.

And please — Platinum Bench. I have to be really honest here. We have stopped at this winery about a hundred times and have not yet tasted the wines. But the BREAD. OMG the bread! Sourdough baked fresh every morning. Fig & Brie. Prosciutto & Jalapeño. Don’t question it. Just stop there and see if they have any bread left for the day.

Beyond the Okanagan

Similkameen Valley — We call it BC’s “Wild West wine frontier.” Raw. Stunning. Pure terroir. Visit Corcelettes, Clos du Soleil, Vanessa Vineyards and the can’t miss stop for serious rose lovers, Bottega Wine Studio.

Vancouver Island — Favourites include Alderlea (fun fact: only people growing Merlot on the island!), Blue Grouse and Church & State near Butchart Gardens.

Kamloops & Shuswap — Emerging regions with character — and a whole lot of potential. Fort Berens is definitely worth the trek, as is Monte Creek.

🍇 ONTARIO: Niagara + County + North Shore

Ontario is Canada’s largest wine-producing region — and some of the best experiences we’ve had anywhere have been here.
But Niagara deserves their own blog post. There’s just too much to share! This is a very small snippet for you to whet your appetite with just two of the many regions in Niagara…

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Warm hospitality and wines that consistently wow us.

Don’t miss:

Bella Terra — Our members adore this place. Marcel, Lou, Fred, the team… world-class everything.

Icellars — One of the most exciting red wine producers in Canada.

Ferox— terroir specialists. We especially love their Chardonnay, Cab Franc, Riesling, Syrah and Cab Sauv.

Big Head — Warning: if Jacob is in the room, buckle up. You might taste 27 wines before breakfast.

Beamsville Bench / Niagara Escarpment

This is serious terroir country. Mineral-driven wines, cool-climate magic.

Our top picks:

Westcott — Beautiful Chardonnays, beautiful Pinots, beautiful people.

Hidden Bench — Benchmark winery. Must-visit.

Niagara Custom Crush Studio — A brand-new concept where multiple small producers share space. Taste dozens of micro-wineries in ONE stop.

Prince Edward County

Beaches, boutique wineries, charming everything. Think: “Niagara meets the coast of Maine.” Our favourites include Closson Chase and Trail Estate. This is an exceptional place for cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Lake Erie North Shore

Sunshine, warmth, Mediterranean style reds — Muscedere is always a treat and my favourite producer from this area.

🌊 Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia)

Wines with ocean breeze in their DNA.

Visit:

Benjamin Bridge — Sparkling wine legends, served at some of the world’s best Michelin star restaurants.

Domaine de Grand Pré — Restaurant + inn + tidal Bay magic.

If you love seafood and crisp whites, this might be your new happy place.

🍷 The Golden Rule of Wine Touring

3–4 wineries per day. MAX.

Anything more is a chaos cocktail:

You get rushed.
You get stressed.
You miss the magic.

We’ve seen people book 7 or 8 wineries in one day and end up spending half the day calling ahead to apologize for being late.

Yes, we have also seen a few very motivated members who succeed with more than 3-4 wineries in a day - but that is a cellar re-stock trip, not necessarily a relaxing wine experience trip.

Wine touring isn’t a race. It’s a slow-down experience.

🧭 Carl’s Smart Touring Tips

1. Plan by sub-region
Don’t mix Lake Country and Naramata on the same day, for instance. Don’t even think about Kelowna → Osoyoos. The distances are very big. Unless you enjoy road trips more than wine.

2. Budget 1.5–2 hours per winery
Even neighbours take time:

Wrap up the tasting
Pay the bill
Get the group to the car (herding cats)
Drive
Park
Repeat

3. Bring snacks and water
Many rural areas have no food nearby. We’ve been “hangry in wine country” more times than we’d like to admit.

4. Make lunch reservations
Or pack a picnic — under a tree, beside the vines, soaking in the views.

5. Know your wine goals

Ask yourself:
What varietals do I love?
Which winemakers do I want to meet?
What styles do I want to try?
Do I want behind-the-scenes, or tasting room fun?

Intention elevates experience.

🔥 Behind-the-Scenes: the Experience You’ll Never Forget

Regular tastings are lovely. But when you step BEHIND the curtain?
Magic.
We’re talking:

Barrel tastings
Vineyard walks
Private cellars
Vertical tastings of rare vintages
Lunches in the vines
Chatting with the winemaker about their philosophy, their journey, their “why”

These moments change your connection to the wine — forever.
Members tell us:
“It felt like we were part of the story.”

That’s exactly how it should feel. And that’s exactly what you’ll experience too if you join us on a future Carl’s Wine Club trip to any wine region.

🎉 Final Thoughts

Canada’s wine regions are diverse, surprising, beautiful, and endlessly rewarding. Whether you're in the desert heat of Osoyoos, the cool limestone soils of Niagara, or the ocean-kissed Annapolis Valley — every region has its own voice.
