From one of the greatest vintages in recent memory, this 2020 blend of Merlot and Cab Franc delivers a great deal of power but is also very approachable. The Merlot was aged in French Oak barrels (15% new) and the Cab Franc was aged in concrete in order to preserve its fruity character. On the nose, you’ll discover great aromas of cassis, red cherry, blueberry jam, a burst of cedar and a hint of fresh herbs. The palate is broad and generous, soft and compelling, highlighting flavours of raspberry, blue plum, current, cassis, mocha and tobacco on a long finish. This last step reveals a burst of white pepper, chocolate and clove, that enhances the finish greatly. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wine can age for 10 years, even if this was not the original intent for this wine. Well done Ilya Senchuk. Ilya Senchuk was one of the first to plant  clone 548 Chardonnay in Niagara and 12 years later he has put together his very first single clone\/single vineyard Chardonnay. 100% of the spectacular 2020 fruits are sourced from a small one acre block of the Leaning Post home vineyard, the Senchuk Vineyard in the Lincoln Lakeshore sub-appellation. On the nose, incredible aromas of lemon meringue, white peach, Asian pear and caramel. Floral notes such as lemongrass and flint are also present as I might have expected.  On the palate I encounter a fresh wine, young with character, lively and cerebral, but friendly enough to make it approachable, along with a rich mid-palate to remind everybody that it comes from the 2020 vintage. The finesse and the delicacy go hand in hand with a structured body. Dominant flavours of sweet lemon cake, yellow apple, a hint of peach and a tremendous continuity between seashell minerality and pure salinity. This medium-bodied Chardonnay is lake satin in your mouth, and expands with savoury layers, energized by focused acidity, and a long, textural finish. Only 65 cases made. The front palate is loaded with juicy flavours of Bing cherry, ripe raspberry, licorice and cranberry compote, while the mid palate offers the perfect weight and freshness combo while enabling the floral and meaty components to shine. It truly showcases the full Gamay flavour spectrum. The finish offers loads of cloves, white pepper and cinnamon. At the current price point, this wine is a “steal of a deal” for any fan of this underrated grape varietal. On the nose, aromas of lemon curd, lemon meringue, orange blossom, pineapple and jasmine flowers are expressive announcing a burst of freshness. On the palate, flavours of lemon custard, Key lime, pear, and a hit of tropical fruits enhance the mid palate. On the finish, a wet stone mineral-like sensation adds length and textural contrast. To say that this wine over-delivers could be an understatement!
