A lovely single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc with pop and character, polished oak profile and tremendous complexity. The nose is intriguing with a nice blend of zesty citrus, green apple, subtle vanilla and a hint of fresh cut herbs like dill, mint and chives. The palate is well structured with flamboyant acidity featuring key lime, grapefruit, quince and passionfruit, and a well-rounded mid-palate with a generous but judicious oak influence, which brings more texture than expected. The most unexpected part of this wine is the finish, which is long and complex with multiple layers of flowers, oak spice and minerality, leaving a nice salty touch at the very end. This is a very small, handcrafted batch of beautiful Niagara Sauvignon Blanc. The 2022 version of the Hughes Sauvignon Blanc is more complex, with a more explosive finish. The edges are more defined, while also showing a tighter and more structured mid-palate.

This vintage was hit hard by a spring frost, but the winemakers who were able to get their hands on Sauvignon Blanc were rewarded big time. This is one of the star varietals of the vintage.

Fermented and aged for just over six months in French oak barrels, including 30% new oak, this wine displays notes of confit lemon, golden apple, vanilla, pink grapefruit, and sweet orange rind.

The finish is the element that takes this wine to the next level: saline, toasty, and lifted, the wine keeps evolving for quite some time. This wine is borderline spectacular.

Different type of vintage, different source of fruit, from Four Mile Creek instead of the Lincoln Lakeshore, and the same style of winemaking resulted in a very different delivery. Bolder, juicier, with riper fruit, more approachable, and so very enjoyable. The acidity is still present and shows up at exactly the right time.

On the nose, aromas of guava, sweet lime, pineapple, gooseberry, dried herbs, and a hint of toastiness. The palate is rich but lifted, showcasing flavours of lemon, green apple, mango, guava, grapefruit, and fresh ginger. Just like the 2022 vintage, a hint of salinity also highlights the finish. This one was also barrel-fermented and aged for nine months, primarily in neutral oak, with 20% new French oak. This is truly a Fume style Sauvignon Blanc….

My favourite part of this wine is that this is not only a sparkling wine, this is truly Sauvignon Blanc. Jeff Moote kept the varietal characteristics alive in the bottle, and the result is fantastic.

With 4g/L of dosage, this shows up as bone dry, and the acidity level is absolutely perfect for this type of wine. The grapes come mostly from the iconic Hughes Vineyard on the Twenty Mile Bench.

Aromas of lime, lemon, yellow apple, brioche, and white flowers are very expressive from the first drop. The palate is precise but rich, and the bubbles are fine and tenacious. Flavours of gooseberry, pink grapefruit, peach, and passion fruit lead into a slightly chalky finish, which I appreciate a lot.

All in all, this is a delicious sparkling wine, and the fact that it comes in a half bottle makes it even more convenient. The value is exceptional.

This wine is aging very well. It’s kinda funny mentioning that for a 2023, but for a rosé, three years of age can sometimes be too much. Not for this Divergence Rosé. Actually, I think this is drinking even better now than it was on release in early 2024. It’s also a lot of fun: 91% Gamay Noir and 9% Sauvignon Blanc. And right now, the Sauvignon Blanc is totally popping!

The nose shows violet, cherry, wild raspberry, peach, and gooseberry. The palate remains fresh and crisp, with pinpoint acidity. The texture is just creamy enough to bring a welcome change of pace and balance that sky-high acidity.

In terms of flavours, you’ll find a great mix of red fruit and citrus, led by raspberry and grapefruit. The finish brings a nice spicy element and a surprising amount of complexity. This wine is in a really good place right now, and it’s another reminder that well-made rosé doesn’t always need to be drunk as young as possible.

58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay, with most of the wine coming from the 2021 vintage (79%), complemented by a smaller portion of reserve wine from the 2020 vintage.

 

Here is the kicker: almost half of the juice was fermented in barrels, bringing a lot of texture and complexity. Beautiful acidity, good-sized bubbles, a sublimely soft texture, and so well layered.

 

The nose shows peach, apple compote, toasty brioche, and wildflowers. The palate is truly generous, with flavours of yellow apple, peach, a line of grapefruit, cherry, raspberry, and toasty vanilla.

 

There is a slight spicy aspect on the back end, mingling with a stony minerality that made me add a full point to my score. For the price, this level of quality is very hard to beat.

 

I could taste this wine all day long. This is a very happy pour!!!

This wine has a fantastic story behind it. One of the very first wines bottled with Roussanne in Ontario, alongside Black Bank Hill, Jeff had to wait months for the VQA to approve the varietal before he could put the wine in bottle. That tells you just how rare Roussanne is in Ontario.

 

This blend of almost equal portions of the three sister grapes of the Rhône Valley, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier, was fermented and aged mostly in second- and third-fill French oak barrels. The result is a rich and balanced white blend with truly unique characteristics.

 

On the nose, aromas of poached pear, orange blossom, marzipan, peach, lemon curd, and ginger. The palate is rich and lifted, showing a perfect balance between alcohol and acidity. Flavours of tropical fruit, including grilled pineapple, are joined by orange marmalade, lemon curd, vanilla, and fruit salad juice. The finish is long, showing great evolution and plenty of oak spice. You definitely need one of these in your cellar.

 

And this bottle is definitely coming with us on our first members’ trip to the Rhône Valley!

When we talk about a wine turning heads on the international level, this top Chardonnay from Divergence is one of them.

 

We brought a couple of bottles with us to Burgundy, and it was one of the stars of our Chardonnay dinner. Alongside several Premier Cru Burgundies, this wine displayed power and precision, but also complexity and a true sense of terroir. Coming from one of the best Chardonnay blocks in Niagara, on the Grimsby Hillside, think Thomas Bachelder and Leaning Post, the flinty finish and salty minerality highlight a spectacular finish and reveal the grape source with grace and precision. This is terroir!

 

Aromas of chamomile, lemon curd, white peach, and oak spice are expressive and precise. The palate is rich and balanced, reflecting many of the aromas, before leading into spectacular salinity and minerality on the finish, which lingers for almost a minute. With 17 months of aging in French oak, using a combination of new and older barrels, this Chardo definitely has some chops.

 

This is a serious Top 10 Wine of the Year candidate.

OK, Viognier is really trending up in Canada, and this one is the “poster child” for the rise of this Rhône varietal. ONLY 32 CASES MADE… this is the true definition of small batch wine.

 

Coming from the Bock Vineyard in the St. David’s Bench appellation, the ripeness and concentration of flavours are perfectly on point. At 14.5% alcohol, this is an outlier, but don’t get fooled: the balance is very impressive, and all the elements are gracefully integrated.

 

Yes, this is a “big boy” wine, and I would even suggest a quick decant to mellow it out a little.

 

The aromas are super expressive and beautiful, with ripe apricot, cantaloupe, Meyer lemon, orange blossom, and loads of oak spice from 10 months in French oak, including 30% new barrels.

 

The palate is super generous. The texture is creamy and thick, but somehow remains balanced. Flavours of yellow plum, apricot jam, orange peel, and poached apple are joined by cinnamon, pie crust, and white pepper. This is super layered and complex. There’s even a stony component on the finish that takes this wine to the next level. It needed that final dimension to justify the super-premium price point, and it delivers.

For fans of “Old World” Syrah, this is the one!

 

91% Syrah, co-fermented with 9% Viognier from the same vineyard in the Lincoln Lakeshore appellation, at Black Bank Hill, one of Niagara’s most exciting up-and-coming producers. This is pure, clean, and authentic, with wonderful elegance and personality.

 

Aged for 18 months in a combination of Hungarian and French oak barrels, this Syrah is floral at first, but the fruit really starts to shine from the mid-palate onward. Aromas of violet, dried sage, tobacco, blackberry, black plum, clove, and cedar. The palate is energetic and precise, with very defined edges. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum, blueberry pie, cracked black pepper, and more oak spice.

 

The tannins are graceful but tenacious, and I really like the charcoal-like sensation on the finish. Complex and elegant!

 

Very well made.... and can age for a decade or so!

How does this work?

Carl's Wine Club is Canada's first pan-Canadian, direct-to-consumer wine club.

We feature a different Canadian winery every 1-2 weeks with a specially curated mix of wines. You choose if and how much wine to purchase, with winery direct pricing and shipping deals. 

 

On Wednesdays (yes Wine Wednesdays!) we also go LIVE on our social media platforms to chat about Canadian wine and often interview winemakers. Cheers!

How does shipping work?

The wineries ship these wines to you via couriers like Canada Post, UPS, Purolator, ATS or GLS and the wines arrive right to your doorstep! No need to spend time or gas or manpower to visit a store.

 

Your wines will ship within 1-2 weeks of your order date, as wineries ship out our club orders all together in a few batches. You'll receive a tracking number from our system and sometimes also from the winery's system.

 

Someone over the legal drinking age must be present at the time of delivery and provide ID to the delivery driver (this is a legal requirement). Please do your best to ensure that an adult is available to receive the order on the anticipated delivery date.
