Lakeside is back!! Great value BC wines.

It's getting harder and harder to find 'value' BC reds that over deliver their price point.

Lakeside does just that, especially when it comes to big red varietals like Merlot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and Syrah.

The Lakeside team takes vines planted as early as 1998 and decades of farming experience in the South Okanagan to bring you the gems to discover below.

Lakeside is also known for their old vine Sauvignon Blanc and bubblies - so we bring you several great examples to try here.

Here's exactly why I rated these wines the way I did! 👇

2022 Lakeside “Bubbles” Sauvignon Blanc – Lakeshore Vineyard
100% Sauvignon Blanc | Dry (2.5g/L RS) | 11.5% ABV
90pts Carl’s Wine Club

Fresh…so fresh and so crisp! That’s the best way to describe this very enjoyable and satisfying single vineyard bubbly. The proximity to Lake Osoyoos is one of the greatest features of Lakeshore Vineyard, which is a great asset for Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose, aromas of grapefruit, lime, guava, melon and pear scream Sauv Blanc all the way through. The palate is bone dry and offers a soft mid-palate, created by 6 months of aging on its lees and the alcohol is pin-point at 12.5%. Dominant flavours of grapefruits, golden pear, green apple and hint of salinity on the finish add to the immediate enjoyment. Outstanding QPR. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024). 378 cases made.

Pairings: bacon wrapped scallops, blueberry goat cheese salad.

2023 Lakeside “Portage” White
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
56% Sauvignon Blanc, 32% Orange Muscat, 12% Muscat Blanc| 13.4% ABV
90pts Carl’s Wine Club | Silver, All Canadian Wine Championships

With more than 50% of the blend led by Sauvignon Blanc, it’s logical to expect a grassy and citrucy approach. The nose is loaded with fresh and vibrant aromas of apple and pear with a hint of citrus fruit that fade into the floral and slightly nutty bouquet. The acidity is engaging, the balance is delightful, the versatility is great. Meanwhile the complex nature of this wine is a pleasant surprise across the board. The palate also delivers the same kinds of attributes, which also include a surprisingly rich mid-palate. The finish lingers more than expected. All in all, this is another outstanding value wine from Lakeside Cellars. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024).

2023 Lakeside Sauvignon Blanc, Lakeshore Vineyard
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Sauvignon Blanc | Dry (1.2 g/L RS) | 13.5% ABV | 91pts Carl’s Wine Club

This wine is the heart of the white wine program at Lakeside Cellars. From the Lakeshore single vineyard, this Sauvignon Blanc was stainless steel fermented alongside lees stirring to create texture and complexity. The hotter than usual 2023 vintage still delivers the usual quality of Lakeside Sauvignon Blanc which includes freshness and a signature minerality driven delivery, found in every vintage. The nose offers aromas of pear, grapefruits, passion fruits and honey melon as well as a floral aspect. The palate displays a round and soft mid-palate with flavours of pear, peach, yellow apple, nectarine and a zest of salty lime on the finish. A warmer vintage provided a richer wine, while the team just reflected what Mother Nature had to offer, with excellent results. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024).

Pairings: pan fried cod, chicken Caesar salad

2020 Lakeside Cabernet-Merlot
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
56% Cab Franc, 36% Merlot, 8% Cab Sauv | Dry (3.2g/L RS) | 14.0% ABV
92pts Carl’s Wine Club

This wine is the artist formerly known as “Portage Red,” a wine which has always been one of my favorite value red blends from the Okanagan Valley. Once again, this blend of Cab Franc, Merlot and Cab Sauv is so freaking enjoyable, so approachable and so versatile. Medium+ body, well balanced, awesome texture, ripe fruits and savoury at the same time, this is a great snapshot of the South Okanagan. Nose and palate are congruent, both delivering a profile of plum, cassis, dark raspberry, cedar, tobacco and mocha. The tannins are soft, and the finish offers a hint of spice. Rare are the days where you can find such a great BC red wine for this price. OUTSTANDING VALUE. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024). 414 cases made.

2020 Lakeside Syrah 🔥 Wine Club Exclusive
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Syrah| Dry (3.2 g/L RS) | 13.9% ABV
91+pts Carl’s Wine Club

The 2020 fruits for the Lakeside Syrah come from the prestigious Han vineyard in East Osoyoos, consistently one of the warmest spots in the South Okanagan. It presents an intense bouquet that is herbaceous, rich and fruity, featuring blueberry, black cherry, black currant, thyme & sage, vanilla and intriguing spicy notes. The palate is plush, fruity and balanced, persistent, with round edges, well layered, highlighting a full and complex mid-palate, with a good level of acidity. Flavours of blueberry pie, ripe plum, blackberry, sweet tobacco leaves, vanilla, savoury herbs and espresso coffee, delivering a long and spicy peppery finish. This is a Lakeside Wine Club Member exclusive, and we are thrilled to have this wine available for Carl’s Wine Club members as well. (Carl Boucher, August 24, 2024). 312 cases made.

2020 Lakeside Cabernet Franc, Desert Valley Vineyard 🔥 Exclusive Pre Release
BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Golden Mile Bench
100% Cab Franc | Dry (3.2 g/L RS) | 14.5% ABV | 92+pts Carl’s Wine Club

This single vineyard Golden Mile Bench might be the standout of this week’s feature. Holy smokes - this Cabernet Franc is delicious! With 24 months of aging in French and American oak, this wine displays richness, depth and complexity, but also stands out for freshness on the mid-palate. On the nose, dark cherry, peppered cherry compote, violets, milk chocolate and red pepper jelly. The palate is luscious, gracious and balanced, delivering a great sequence of pure Cabernet Franc flavours like red bell pepper, dark cherry, black berry, mocha followed by the influence of the barrels with flavours of vanilla, clove and lingering white pepper. The tannins are melting quickly into the structure, and the acidity keeps the balance in check. Well done!! (Carl Boucher, August 24, 2024). 312 cases made.

2020 Lakeside Cabernet Sauvignon, Lakeshore Vineyard
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Cab Sauv | Dry (1.2 g/L RS) | 13.5% ABV
90+pts Carl’s Wine Club

From the home vineyard on Lakeshore road in East Osoyoos, from 25 year old vines, aged for 24 months on American oak, this Cabernet opens with aromas of dark cherries, blackcurrant, dark plums, with hints of lightly toasted vanilla, mint, crushed slate and pencil shavings. Even after four years and a hint of barrel influence remaining on the front palate, the concentrated savoury flavors further integrate with blackberries, black currant, dark raspberry, tobacco, anise, minerality and mushroom-like earthiness. Bright and structured, the smooth and lasting tannins balance the intense fruit and bright acidity, leaving a lingering, mouth-watering finish. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024).

2019 Lakeside “Provenir” Reserve
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
34% Merlot, 33% Cab Franc, 33% Cab Sauv | Dry (3.2 g/L RS) | 14.1% ABV
🔥 93pts Carl’s Wine Club

This is by far the very best “Provenir,” Lakeside Cellars flagship wine, that I have tasted to date. The balance, the freshness, the texture, the complexity: all of these attributes have reached the next level, and it shines brightly in this new 2019 release. From the best barrels and the best parcels of the family portfolio, this wine offers savoury aromas exuding blackberry, cassis, black currant, dry sage, cedar, licorice and pipe tobacco. Graceful, restrained dark fruit flavours shine in the glass, with cassis, plum and chocolate. Despite its fruitiness, the Merlot is more leafy than ripe - very classic and elegant. On the palate the wine is thick but also reflects a light stony side that I think is provided by the Cab Sauv. (Carl Boucher, August 24, 2024). 288 cases made.

Pairings: grilled beef tenderloin, garlic prime rib

2020 Lakeside “Blanc de Noirs” Reserve, Testalinden Vineyard
BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Golden Mile Slopes
100% Pinot Noir | Dry (2.5g/L RS) | 11.5% ABV
90+pts Carl’s Wine Club | Bronze, Decanter

With 18 months of lees aging, this single vineyard, traditional method Pinot Noir sparkling wine is the first of its kind for Lakeside Cellars. I have to say, this is an exciting start, and as the young vines mature I expect to see the quality of this wine increase also. The nose offers aromas of Ambrosia apple, pear, orange blossom, lightly buttered brioche, and lime pie. Without a dramatic complexity, this very fresh and enjoyable bubbly is worth monitoring in the coming years. Flavours of apple pie, melon, lemon, peach, white tea, freshly baked biscuits and a hint of salinity on the finish. The slightly tinted pinkish hue adds to the romance of this small batch wine. (Carl Boucher, August 25, 2024). 210 cases made.

The Story & People

Lakeside Cellars is located in Osoyoos, BC and represents the culmination of a lifelong commitment to farming.

In 2015, Harbans and Harkesh Dhaliwal purchased the historical landmark and resting place of the Haynes Homestead and converted it to a winery site. Their son Ricky Dhaliwal is Lakeside’s winemaker, while Ricky’s wife Danielle Dhaliwal is in charge of operations.

This is the fourth time we have featured Lakeside Cellars in the club, and the first few rounds were a big hit amongst members. Osoyoos is a unique and warm terroir that produces rich and concentrated red wines and flavourful whites.

Cheers to you and your Lakeside wine discoveries!

Carl

Lakeside winemaker Ricky Dhaliwal was raised in the agricultural community of Oliver, BC. Ricky has been working in orchards since he was a kid including his family’s vast cherry plantings in Creston, BC.

Studying viticulture at Okanagan College, Ricky converted the old Okanagan orchards into successful vineyards through study and execution. In 2016, with the purchase of the Lakeshore property, Ricky moved into the cellar to craft Lakeside’s first vintage of reds.

Ricky currently manages Lakeside’s vineyards and cellars and continues his winemaking goal of ensuring his family’s South Okanagan fruit is showcased to the best of its potential.
