Wine with a Story: Taste the Terroir of the Okanagan Valley

This week’s featured winery takes us to Summerland, in the heart of BC's Okanagan Valley!

Everything began in 2005 when Christine Coletta and her husband, Steve Lornie, planted a small vineyard to supply local wineries with grapes.

Flash forward to today, they own over 375 acres across Summerland's three sub-Geographical Indicators. The newly re-designed Okanagan Crush Pad winery and tasting room in Summerland is a sight to behold, with a plethora of unique winemaking vessels including clay amphorae, concrete vessels (some are even custom made with the very soils from each vineyard), steel tanks and neutral oak barrels. Their wines focus around three main wine labels: Haywire, Free Form and Narrative.

I found it most fascinating to taste through their many dozens of wines and bring you both Mira and my favourites!

When you talk about 'tasting terroir' there is an example in the Okanagan Crush Pad portfolio that stands out for any wine lover to experience. The Garnet Valley wines have a unique, distinctive salty and chalky minerality component that spans across grape varietals. You can taste it in the 2018 Free Form Blanc de Noirs (93 points), the 2020 Free Form Vin Gris (91pts), and the 2020 Haywire Garnet Valley Ranch Chardonnay (91pts).

There are no wines in this curated selection rated under 90+pts. These are wines I not only recommend, but would most certainly purchase again as they over-deliver their price point.

With the skilled leadership of winemakers Matt Dumayne and Kat D'Costa, this winery showcases what the Valley can do in terms of minimal intervention, sustainable and organic winemaking...and in the examples I've featured here, I'm truly impressed!

The Winery Story

Okanagan Crush Pad opened in 2011 to provide a home-base for Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie’s original wine label Haywire, and to serve as a custom crush facility for other wineries.

Today the winery makes its own wines exclusively, under the labels Haywire, Narrative, Free Form, and Bizou + Yukon.

The Okanagan Crush Pad winery is state-of-the-art. It features long banks of concrete tanks, clay amphorae, and large format neutral oak casks. The guest center is built into the heart of the facility, offering visitors a rare glance into the art of winemaking.

When open, the tasting lounge and patio offers a place to sample and buy wines that reflect the region’s unique high mountain, northern desert setting.

Today, the winery owns 375 acres of land on two distinct vineyard sites: Switchback Vineyard and Garnet Valley Ranch in Summerland. Each site is Certified Organic.

On the farming side, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are planted, along with eight acres of organic field crops at the Garnet Valley site.

At the winery, you will find winemaker Matt Dumayne at the helm, creating terroir-driven wines made from organic grapes, utilizing wild yeast fermentations and low intervention winemaking, employing varying vessels that combine to bring out the best of Okanagan terroir.

Matt Dumayne joined OCP in 2013 as Chief Winemaker. Matt received his winemaking training in New Zealand and has worked over 30 vintages around the world increasing his knowledge and perfecting his craft.

Matt is dedicated to creating wines that are textbook examples of what the Okanagan does best – fresh, lively, dynamic wines that celebrate vineyard and vintage. The concrete tanks at OCP allow the wines to be more expressive of the grape variety and terroir they are from while allowing the wine to develop a palate of richness, usually found in oak-aged wines.
