Here's exactly why I rated these wines the way I did! 👇

2022 Evolve Syrah Rosé
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Syrah | Dry (RS 9.0g /L) | 12.1% ABV
90+ pts Carl’s Wine Club

I’m very impressed with this wine. First of all, it’s $19.99 at the winery (plus tax). Secondly, the wine over-delivers that price point by a LOT. This rose is made using the “saignée” method with a light and friendly profile with a great weight on the mid-palate. Fantastic salmon colour, and very refreshing on the palate - a perfect Summer star! On the nose, red cherry, raspberry, watermelon and light fresh herbs which express themselves in a refreshing way. The palate is crisp and well balanced with ripe field berries, watermelon, strawberry rhubarb pie, a pleasant hint of grapefruit acidity and a hint of white pepper on the finish. Everything you need to quench your thirst. At this price, and with such a small case count, it’s time to stock up! (Carl Boucher, July 25, 2024). 235 cases made.

2021 Chronos Riesling
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Riesling | Dry (RS 9.0g /L) | 11.9% ABV
91+pts Carl’s Wine Club | 92pts Natalie Mclean | Gold, All Canadian Wine Championships

A fantastic Riesling showing great varietal purity and varietal expression! From texture to energy, from roundness to acidity...this wine has it all. On the nose, a hint of petrol reveals an immediate Riesling character, followed by honey melon, apple crisp and lime, while jasmine and flint components resurge on a second smell to show a great complexity of aromas. The palate has displayed fantastic characteristics starting by a fresh spark of acidity and flavours of Key lime, green apple, cantaloupe, mandarin and a hint of grilled pineapple. The mid-palate is extremely satisfying and approachable due to the 9 grams of residual sugar. The finish is flinty, mouth-watering and lingers for a very long time, which is a quality I look for in any good Riesling. Well done! (CWC July 22, 2024).

2021 Chronos Semillon 🔥 Pre-Release

BC, VQA Okanagan Valley100% Sémillon | Dry (RS 2.3g /L) | 12.7% ABV

91pts Carl’s Wine Club

This small batch pre-release of Semillon is a very food friendly wine with great texture, but also great structure. Partially oaked (almost 50-50 split), this Sémillon delivers aromas of white flowers, vanilla custard, honey melon, peach, lemon Madeline and a hint of grassiness. The palate is soft, generous and offers an ample silky mouth-feel, largely due to some time spent in oak but also due to a natural richness of the grape varietal. The flavour profile displays ripe peach and yellow apple on the front-palate before transitioning to a more beeswax and honey profile on the mid-palate. The back-end offers lemon meringue and mandarin, while the finish has a noticeable salinity and lingers with a white pepper perspective. A fantastic price which undoubtedly will go up in the near future!!! (CWC July 26, 2024). 200 cases made.

Food pairing:  creamy shrimp & scallop pasta, steamed halibut

2020 Chronos Cabernet Syrah
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Syrah | Dry (RS 3.5g /L) | 13.2% ABV
92+pts Carl’s Wine Club

This is one of the most intriguing wines of this line up. At first, the Cab Sauv stands out, but the Syrah quickly joins the party. A very classy wine with aromas of black currant, graphite, dry flowers, thyme and blueberry, and a touch of cocoa. The palate is energetic, directional, with stiffer tannins (that I like). The front-palate is especially loaded with dark fruits: black cherry, blackberry, and black currants. There’s a sensation of charcoal and pencil lead, and alongside the tannins this amounts to a lot of action on the mid-palate. The finish has loads of spice, white pepper, pink pepper, and a bit of black tea…and it definitely lingers for a long time. The intense minerality of the Cab Sauv really brings top complexity to satisfy your best cravings. It’s also no where near the peak of it’s curve, so we will see a lot more from this wine with patience in the cellar. (Carl Boucher, July 25, 2024). 368 cases made.

2018 TIME Syrah
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Syrah | Dry (RS 3.2g /L) | 13.9% ABV
93pts Carl’s Wine Club | WineAlign, Silver 2021 | 91pts Deanna van Mulligan

Wow, this Syrah is super feminine and elegant! This wine is peaking right now with fantastic softness, length and complexity. 18 months in French oak barrels produced a wine with great finesse. On the nose, mint chocolate, and very classic aromas of ripe dark cherry, red licorice, smoked meat, dark plum, and clove. The palate is soft and round with tannins that have melted into the structure of the wine. In terms of flavours: black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, dry herbs, with a slight meaty component past the mid-palate. The finish lingers with amble delivery of the classic South Okanagan white pepper, and also cardamom and cinnamon. (Carl Boucher, July 25, 2024). 350 cases made.

2020 Chronos Syrah
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Syrah | Dry (RS 4.0g /L) | 13.2% ABV
91pts Carl’s Wine Club | 92pts BC Wine Trends | WineAlign, Bronze 2023

Medium-body and very Syrah, this wine is just getting started. As of this writing, it takes
a little while for this wine to open up, but when ready, it displays an appealing, rich profile reminiscent of further south in Washington State. Aromas of red cherry, dark licorice, pipe tobacco, and fresh thyme. With a good decant, the palate gets creamy, the tannins soften up, and it becomes very approachable and versatile. On the front-palate, some classic flavours of blueberry, dark cherry, dark cocoa, anise and sweet tobacco leaves. There’s also a spark of vanilla past the mid-palate, likely from the American oak. The finish is quite long, with an above-average complexity: a great snapshot of a good vintage for Syrah in the Okanagan. (Carl Boucher, July 25, 2024). 400 cases made.

2014 TIME Syrah
1.5L Magnum
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Syrah | Dry (RS 1.8g /L) | 13.8% ABV
91+pts Carl’s Wine Club | 92pts Natalie Mclean

This library wine stood up to Father Time and keeps rolling strong with wonderful texture, a layered profile and lengthy finish. On the nose, this South Okanagan Syrah offers aromas of pot-pourri, dark plum, black cherry, peppered raspberry compote, dried herb, licorice and cinnamon. The palate is exquisite, soft and sensual, delivering multiple layers of red and dark fruits like black raspberry, blue plum, stewed strawberry, cassis and black currant. The mid palate offers mint, vanilla and dark chocolate, while the finish
displays a charcoal-like minerality mixed with long-lasting white pepper, espresso coffee and clove. The oversized 1.5L Magnum bottle always helps with the ageability of a wine and this bottle is no different. This wine is shining right now! Get your hands on this rare collector’s item for your upcoming special occasion or to share with a special group of guests when entertaining. (CWC July 14, 2023).

2018 Evolve Sparkling Brut Rosé 🔥 Pre-Release
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 9% Pinot Blanc and 1% Syrah | Dry (RS 2.0g /L) | 12.5% ABV
92pts Carl’s Wine Club | 92pts, Gold, WineAlign | Gold, All Canadian Wine Championships | Top 50 BC Wines

This is an excellent Traditional Method Sparkling, showing lively, crisp, and racy character…very similar to a well-made Champagne, with the exception of the price. This Okanagan sparkling goes for less than half the price I would expect to pay for any premium Champagne. Aged for 5 years on its lees, this wine offers very classic aromas of baked brioche, raspberry-rhubarb pie, ambrosia apple, grapefruit, fresh thyme and a hint of lemon. The palate is absolutely stunning with World Class creaminess and consistent mousse on the mid-palate. Flavours of raspberry, Rainier cherry, field berries and rhubarb are obvious at the front. Meanwhile sweet lemon zest, grapefruit and salty minerality highlight the back-end. But again, the incontestable highlight is the creaminess of the mid-palate. They would charge me $100 for this wine and I would not blink an eye. That’s how highly I think of this bubbly. Now keep that on the down low, and get yourself a few! (CWC July 4, 2024).

The Story & People

Our next winery takes us to Penticton, BC to the first urban winery in BC: TIME Family of Wines.

With a rich history of over fifty years of winemaking in BC, TIME was recently purchased by the Mayert family, whose roots also run deep in the Okanagan.

I was thrilled to discover some of the newer releases - including pre-releases - in this week's winery discovery. Some of our very favourites from TIME have aged beautifully as in the 2014 and 2018 Syrahs. This is truly a selection to try if you love bold reds and if you love Syrah.

When tasting the 2018 Evolve Rose Brut (pre-release) amongst over 90 other Canadian roses (live!) I rated it 92 points and it was the #2 Rose Bubbly in the country. A promising start to the re-imagined Evolve brand that will now focus on bubbly!

I hope you can join us to discover TIME!

Cheers,

Carl
