Worth the wait: our first Vancouver Island winery discovery!
Discover Blue Grouse, from Vancouver Island's Cowichan Valley, BC.
Our First-Ever Vancouver Island Feature.
Long before the Cowichan Valley was on wine lovers’ radar, Blue Grouse was planting vines and proving it could be done.
They tested over 100 varietals.
Survived false starts and frost-laced vintages.
And through it all, they stayed true to a vision:
that this cool, coastal corner of BC could grow world-class wine.
Today, Blue Grouse stands as a pioneer—and a proof point.
Low yields. Cool climate. Deep-rooted vines in glacial marine soil.
Every bottle is shaped by the wind, the ocean, and the hands of a winery built for the long game.
Join us this week to discover one of the most promising and exciting wine regions in Canada - especially when it comes to World Class Pinot Noir.

Blue Grouse
NV Blue Grouse Rose Charme De L'Île Sparkling Brut | 91+pts
91.5
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 100% Gamay Noir
This 100% Estate Gamay Noir from the Cowichan Valley is one of the stars of Blue Grouse Winery and a personal favourite - right from the first time I tasted it at their vineyard guest house. Just get me a plate of charcuterie with that wine, and I'm in heaven. Bright, crisp and vibrant, this sparkling is extremely versatile. On the nose: aromas of stewed berries, red apples, peach, and cherries. The palate opens up with a tad of sweetness, lots of red cherries and berries, and the longer the profile develops in your mouth, the more dry it gets. There's also a bit of meatiness on the mid-palate and a beautifully balanced ratio of acidity versus sweetness. One of the most efficient food wines out there ready for any occasion and menu. By the way...Charme De L'Île is an appellation wine for Vancouver Island wineries which requires the wine to be made in the Charmat method with 100% of grapes from the island. Similar to the Tidal Bay appellation wine of Nova Scotia, this special wine showcases the regional typicity and terroir of Vancouver Island.
Dry | 12.0% ABV | Drink from 2024 to 2027

- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- Schönburger, Müller Thurgau, Bacchus, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay
Charme De L'Île is an appellation wine for Vancouver Island wineries which requires the wine to be made in the Charmat method with 100% of grapes from the island. Similar to the Tidal Bay appellation wine of Nova Scotia, this special wine showcases the regional typicity and terroir of Vancouver Island. This white brut sparkling is a great example and perfect wine for any seafood lunch or dinner! On the nose: floral delicacy, lychee, and orchard fruit. On the palate: round and soft, peach and pear, and a surf of freshness and acidity throughout the frame of the wine.

Blue Grouse
2019 Blue Grouse Traditional Method Sparkling | 90+pts
90.5
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 50% Müller-Thurgau, 25% Ortega, 25% Pinot Gris
This bone-dry traditional method sparking offers a crisp, vibrant and salty expression of Vancouver Island. Nose of white flower, green apple, crunchy sugar cookie and pear. The palate is loaded with green apple and red apple, cranberry, a spark of citrus and a long salty finish. There's also a tartness, like apple skin, that lasts and lasts at the end and holds the finish together beautifully. Müller-Thurgau makes up half of the blend and is an original star grape varietal on Vancouver Island. It's a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale. The rest is comprised of Ortega (25%) and Pinot Gris (25%). In short: interesting, refreshing, and enough complexity to be a serious contender at your next wine tasting!

Blue Grouse
2024 Blue Grouse Pinot Gris | 89+pts
89.5pts
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 100% Pinot Gris
Dry | 11.5% ABV | Drink from 2024 to 2028
Sourced from three different vineyards across the Cowichan Valley, including some of the oldest Pinot Gris vines at the Blue Grouse Estate, this Pinot Gris was fermented in a mix of concrete (80%) and neutral French oak (20%). This gives the wine both texture and nerve. The concrete preserves the purity and highlights the beautiful line of minerality found across the wine's profile, while the touch of neutral oak enhances the texture and mouthfeel. On the nose, white flower, citrus, and cantaloupe. Meanwhile the palate delivers a precise expression of the grape highlighting the energy of the terroir with flavours of citrus and a hint of orchard fruit on the mid-palate. Definitely a minerality-driven Pinot Gris and a very interesting bottle for your next tasting or meal!
Dry | 11.5% ABV | Drink from 2024 to 2028
Pairings: seared pickerel, fresh spot prawns

2024 Blue Grouse Rose | 92pts
92pts
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 63% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Gris, 12% Gamay, 10% Chardonnay
Wow! What a spectacular rose, made Provencal-style in terms of the light salmon hue, weight, and flavour expression. This is definitely a stand-out in the Blue Grouse portfolio, and one of the top Vancouver Island roses I have tasted. The blend of white and red grapes brings layers and complexity but also reflects the expression of the Blue Grouse vineyards and style. Fermented in a trilogy of vessels that preserve acidity, fruit flavour, enhance texture and highlight minerality: stainless steel, neutral French and concrete. This rose truly has it all! Nose of subtle violet, lemon peel, gooseberry, and raspberry. Then, an explosion of grapefruit, lime, crabapple, and a hint of sweet cherry on the palate.

Blue Grouse
2022 Blue Grouse Pinot Noir | 92pts
92
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 100% Pinot Noir
Produced from three prized Cowichan Valley vineyards. The clones were fermented separately in terracotta and aged 20 months in neutral French oak. The final result? Absolutely spectacular. This wine proves that the Cowichan Valley is becoming a benchmark region for Pinot Noir in North America for those in the know. I could define the style as Oregnonian, but in reality, this is truly 'Vancouver Island' style. Dominant red fruit expression on the nose and on the palate, enhanced with a slight floral and earthy component which makes that Pinot fairly complex. The palate offers texture and layers, with a lingering, mineral finish that left me very impressed. 92pts Carl's Wine Club | 91pts Anthony Gismondi | Silver, National WineAlign
Dry | 11.0% ABV | Drink from 2024 to 2030
Pairings: grilled pork chops, chicken breast in creamy wild mushroom sauce

2023 Blue Grouse Reserve Pinot Gris | 92pts
92
- BC Vancouver Island Cowichan Valley
- 100% Pinot Gris
This Pinot Gris acts like a Chardonnay! I'm referring to texture, layers and complexity and how it is truly a snapshot of the world class terroir on Vancouver Island. Aromas of peach, yellow apple, chamomile and a hint of citrus. The palate is rich, layered, and well balanced between alcohol, acidity and fruit. Flavours include pear, apple, and tons of lingering minerals on the back palate to make this Pinot Gris extra special. PS...this is Mira's favourite Pinot Gris of all time! 92pts Carl's Wine Club | 91pts Anthony Gismondi
Dry | 12.0% ABV | Drink from 2024 to 2029
Pairings: Ahi tuna steaks, grilled pork chops

The Story Behind Blue Grouse
Blue Grouse Estate Winery is a cornerstone of Vancouver Island’s wine story.
Tucked into the rolling hills of the Cowichan Valley, it began as a humble test vineyard over 30 years ago and has quietly grown into one of BC’s most compelling cool-climate estates.
Now under the care of the Jackson family and winemaker Stacy Hornemann—formerly of California’s renowned Stonestreet Estate—Blue Grouse is entering an exciting new chapter.
With international experience and a deep passion for terroir, Hornemann brings a fresh lens to the winery’s legacy of sustainable farming and small-lot winemaking.
From mineral-driven Pinot Gris and Burgundian-style Pinot Noir to expressive sparkling wines, Blue Grouse captures the wind, the soil, and the soul of Vancouver Island in every bottle.
