The Great Canadian Cab Franc Marathon 2025

We opened nearly 60 bottles of Cabernet Franc from coast to coast, and streamed the whole tasting LIVE on social media on September 26, 2025. 


Nova Scotia. Niagara. Prince Edward County. Similkameen. Okanagan. And, winemakers stopped by the livestream for interviews. 


It was a Cab Franc fest!


And the Canadian Cab Franc?


It was truly world class. Versatile. Utterly delicious.


If you’ve followed us for a while, you know I’ve said it before — Cabernet Franc might just be THE Canadian red grape. Kind of like I believe Chardonnay is our Canadian white grape.


It thrives in every region. It holds its structure in heat and its soul in the cold. And when it’s grown and handled right, it can go toe-to-toe with the greats of the Loire.


This marathon confirmed it.

🍷What We Learned

1️⃣ Consistency across regions.
From Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy cliffs to BC’s desert vineyards, Cab Franc showed an incredible steadiness. Even in cooler or challenging years, it delivers perfume, spice, and balance.


2️⃣ Style is geography.
Ontario: brighter, red-fruited, floral — classic Loire energy.
BC: darker, denser, more tobacco and graphite.
Nova Scotia: a revelation — the first-ever 2016 Benjamin Bridge Cab Franc still alive, vibrant, and humming with acidity.


3️⃣ Oak restraint wins.
The best bottles used oak like punctuation, not perfume. When the fruit and spice shine through, Cab Franc sings.


4️⃣ Aging potential is real.
From the 2011 Black Hills Cellarhand to 2017 Bella Terra and 2018 Kern Co, the structure and freshness are remarkable. Even a seven-year-old $15 Vineland entry-level bottle was singing.


5️⃣ The spice spectrum is endless.
White pepper, cracked black, cardamom, chili — sometimes all in one glass. You don’t get that anywhere else quite like you do here.

Niagara Benchlands: Fogolar, Ménide, Watchful Eyes and Kern & Co (94pts) showing depth, purity, and minerality.


Similkameen Valley: Corcelettes 2022 Cab Franc (93 pts) captured raw, dusty mountain energy — a collector’s sleeper.


Naramata Bench: Tightrope 2022 (91+) proved that balance and stony precision can stand beside richer southern styles.


South Okanagan (Osoyoos/Oliver): Hester Creek Old Vines 2022 and Phantom Creek's examples both show power and silkiness - and a bolder and richer style. 


Lillooet: Fort Berens 2022 (91 pts) — crunchy red fruit, cigar leaf and minerality from a pioneer terroir.


Bay of Fundy: Benjamin Bridge 2016 (90+) — historic first vintage, showing the potential of Atlantic reds.

1️⃣ Kern & Co 2018 (Wismer-Foxcroft, Niagara) — 94 pts
A masterclass in balance & texture. Only 43 cases made. Pure Black Forest cake, silky tannin, perfect curve.


2️⃣ Bottega Wine Studio “Franc” 2023 (Similkameen) — 94 pts
Two barrels only. Precision, depth, and cellar-worthy power. Future collector legend.


3️⃣ Bella Terra 2017 (Four Mile Creek) — 93 pts
At its peak right now. Soft, layered, textural — the definition of Niagara maturity.


4️⃣ Corcelettes 2022 (Similkameen) — 93 pts
Dusty mountain tannins, red currant, and wild sage. Authentic Similkameen character.


5️⃣ Phantom Creek 2021 “Kobo Vineyard” (Okanagan Falls) — 93 pts
Muscular, polished, and complex. A collector’s BC benchmark.


6️⃣ Ménide 2023 (Grimsby Hillside, Niagara) — 93 pts
Natural ferment, deep color, easy ten-year aging curve. Tiny production, huge potential.


7️⃣ Hester Creek 2022 Old Vines (Osoyoos) — 92 pts
Silky, ripe and elegant — proof that maturity and precision can coexist in the South Okanagan.


8️⃣ Watchful Eye 2022 (Lincoln Lakeshore) — 92+ pts
Structure, focus, and balance — a new Niagara producer to watch.


9️⃣ Cave Spring 2022 CSV (Niagara Bench) — 92 pts
Elegant and fine-boned with a Bordeaux edge. Proof that Cab Franc can be graceful.


🔟 Vineland 2020 — 92 pts
The value champ: $15.95 tax-in for a true Cab Franc experience. Winemaker Brian Schmidt’s passion in a bottle.
 

💬 Final Take

After nearly 60 Cab Francs including two rosés, one Nova Scotia first-ever, and back-vintages going back to 2011, the verdict’s clear to me:


Cabernet Franc is our national red. 


We've done similar marathons over the years for Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cab Sauv, Syrah, and red blends. 


Cab Franc has the discipline to thrive in cool climates, the flair and ageability to wow collectors, and the heart to bring a table of friends together for four hours of laughter, debate, and purple teeth.


And with back-vintages going back to 2011 in this tasting, I am thrilled with the performance of this varietal for cellaring as well.
