Here's exactly why I rated these wines the way I did! 👇

2023 D’Angelo “Rosalina” Tempranillo Rose
BC, Okanagan Valley, Naramata Bench
100% Tempranillo | Dry | 13.0% ABV
91pts Carl's Wine Club

This is a mouth-watering rose with a crisp, bright and energetic profile. A hint of residual sugar on the mid-palate makes it a complete and food friendly summer wine. Made from 100% Estate Naramata Bench Tempranillo fruits, fermented and aged in stainless steel, this saigne rose offers aromas of red cherry, ambrosia apple, cranberry and a hint of peach and dried herbs. The palate is directional and crisp, delivering flavours of raspberry, rhubarb, and watermelon, while the mid-palate brings a hint of jolly rancher sweetness. The back end comes with a hit a citrus and crabapple. A feeling of tartness eliminates the sweetness of the mid-palate. This could well be the best Rosalina to date…very well done and very well-priced. (Carl Boucher, August 2, 2024).

2023 D’Angelo Montepulciano Rose
BC, Okanagan Valley, Naramata Bench
100% Montepulciano | Dry | 12.0% ABV
92pts Carl's Wine Club

While the Rosalina is bright and crisp, the Montepulciano is rich and complex! Two wines with opposite delivery and completely different perspectives. From the only plot of Montepulciano grapes in Canada, Chris D’Angelo did a daily lees stirring during fermentation to deliver an extraordinary result in terms of texture, softness and complexity. The nose opens up on aromas of Bing cherry, wild strawberry, and baked berry pie. Peach, apricot and a hint of violet surf through on a subsequent wave. The palate is an absolute beauty, sooo textural…delivering more than last year’s very small-batch first edition! Rich but delicate, it offers flavours of strawberry/apple pie, red cherry, peach, cantaloupe and white spice on the finish. There’s a hint of salinity at the very end, which brings an extra wave of complexity. This one is certainly one of my top roses of the year and a new discovery after our ‘rose marathon’ tasting held earlier in the season. (Carl Boucher, August 2, 2024).

2019 D’Angelo “Miscela” Tempranillo
BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Naramata Bench
90% Tempranillo, 5% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc | Dry | 14.0% ABV
92pts Carl's Wine Club

This Tempranillo falls into a medium+ body, with stunning structure and aging potential. It’s racy and very long, very tannin driven and energetic with power and focus. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2019 is pure class. On the nose expressive aromas of red fruits, mocha, tobacco, licorice, plum, violets, dried herbs and bay leaves abound. The palate is crisp but offers a soft and creamy texture. Flavours of crunchy red fruits like red cherry, freshly picked wild raspberry, red currant, sweet tobacco leaves, expresso coffee, vanilla and oak spices surf along to a long, satisfying peppery finish. This young Tempranillo can use a 30 minute decant or a pass through your Enovino. This wine is absolutely excellent! Well done Sal D’Angelo!!! (Carl Boucher, August 6, 2024).

2013 D’Angelo “Miscela” Tempranillo

BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Naramata Bench

90% Tempranillo, 5% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc | Dry | 15.0% ABV

91pts Carl's Wine Club

This is a very well-aged wine that shows character and maturity. Despite the fact that 2013 was a very hot vintage resulting in the 15% of alcohol announced on the label, this Estate Naramata Bench Tempranillo still shows freshness and precision, which is very impressive for an 11 year old wine. On the nose, the wine offers seductive aromas of ripe plum, cooked strawberry, dry thyme, dark licorice, brown sugar, dried fig and clove. The palate is soft and vibrant, showing little signs of slowing down. The flavours match the aromas to a “T” and an intriguing and purposeful hint of oxidation starts to appear in your glass after 30 minutes, which is expected from a wine of that age. The tannins are still rocking while they have surely softened over the years and the finish shows lots of oak spices with impressive structure throughout. (Carl Boucher, August 5, 2024).

NV D’Angelo “Dolce Vita” Rosso

BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Naramata Bench

100% Tempranillo | Fortified  (RS 97.0 g /L) | 18.3% ABV

95pts Carl's Wine Club

I tasted this wine out of the barrel two years ago, and I knew from that moment the wine would be special one day…but to be honest, I didn’t anticipate it would be THAT special. OMG, this is Top 10 Wines of the Year material. From 100% Tempranillo grapes, 7 years of barrel aging, mostly coming from the 2016 vintage, this small batch of fortified wine has to be the very best Canadian “port style” wine I have ever tasted. Fragrant nose of pipe tobacco, plums, Morello cherries, dark chocolate, violets, eucalyptus and toffee are mingling beautifully with aromas of dried herbs and oak spices. On the palate, this bottle offers a very creamy and richly textured wine with substantial fruit weight, with blue plum, dark cherry, cassis and raspberry jam, sweet oak spice, licorice and loads of tobacco. There is a toasted note of espresso bean on the finish interacting with cracked black pepper and cloves. The most surprising aspect of this 18+ % alcohol it’s the freshness: it’s fantastically bright and crisp for an after meal pour. It also shows elegant restraint despite its natural power. (Carl Boucher, August 2, 2024).

"Our focus is to produce quality Wines, 100% estate grown and hand harvested. Quality is grown.”

- Sal D'Angelo

In 1979 Salvatore D’Angelo began his search for the land on which to plant his vineyard.

An accomplished amateur winemaker, his ambition was to start his own winery within the heart of Essex County, in Southern Ontario. In 1983 he bought 50 acres in Amherstburg, just south of Windsor. Then in 1984 Sal planted his first acre of grapes, and made his first vintage in 1989.

By this time, Sal had read every book he could get his hands on about wine, thoroughly studying all aspects of growing and making it. He was becoming even more aware of the impressive winemaking history of the beautiful Okanagan Valley. By the early 80s he had resolved to follow up on his extensive research of the area with a visit.

After he was presented with the Grape King Award 1999, the top honor presented each year in Ontario for having the finest vineyard, he knew it was time to reach even higher.

So he searched out the best property he could find in the Okanagan Valley and decided on the Naramata Bench on the east shore of Okanagan Lake.1999 also brought the D’Angelo Estate Winery’s tenth anniversary as a wine producer.

Sal has a unique philosophy as a vintner. “Quality is grown” are the words he lives by.

Throughout the vineyard, only the finest French viniferas and hybrids are planted. The Amherstburg Ontario location was sold in 2017.

Today, D’Angelo Vineyards has over 8 acres of vines planted in the Okanagan Valley on the renowned Naramata Bench including the new Montepulciano vineyard.

This makes Sal the first individual grower-vintner to produce wines in both Ontario and British Columbia. D’Angelo Estate Winery produced its first vintage from its BC Winery in 2005.
