Show Your Love for Da Silva Winery: A True Okanagan Valley Gem

On August 17, Da Silva had to shut the doors of it's tasting room and restaurant on the Naramata Bench.

A water main burst in front of the winery, causing a great deal of damage to the winery.

Members voted Da Silva our #1 BC Winery of the Year out of all the wineries we discovered in 2022...and now, it's time for our community to show them just how much they're loved!

Update: Da Silva was able to provisionally re-open their tasting room and restaurant on September 5! This is what resilience looks like...way to go Da Silva!

2022 Da Silva Cor de Rosa | Exclusive Pre-Release! - Carl's Wine Club

2022 Da Silva Cor de Rosa

🔥 Exclusive Release | Only 22 bottles left!
Canada, BC, Okanagan Valley
70% Merlot, 30% Pinot Noir| Dry | 12.7% ABV
92pts Carl’s Wine Club

This wine made it to my top 5 rose of the year and the third highest rated in the rose marathon among 92 Canadian roses with a stunning 92pts. Vibrant, expressive and serious, this rosé has so much to offer. On the nose, generous aromas of orange, strawberry pie, red apple and a hint of fresh herbs like basil and parsley. On the palate, the texture is round and gracious, offering distinctive flavours of fresh squeezed navel orange, field strawberries and the bitterness of a rhubarb stick, which brings precision to this small batch rosé. The finish is snappy and lively, and so far one of the most complex rosés of the 2022 vintage! Well done Richard Da Silva… (Carl Boucher, April 04, 2023).

2022 Da Silva “Hidden Hollow Vineyard” Chenin Blanc - Carl's Wine Club

2022 Da Silva “Hidden Hollow Vineyard” Chenin Blanc

🔥 Only 19 bottles left!
BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Naramata Bench
100% Chenin Blanc | Dry | 12.6% ABV
🔥 93pts Carl’s Wine Club

This might be THE wine of the summer… from the sunkissed Hidden Hollow vineyard on the Naramata Bench. A bone dry, highly energetic unoaked white wine with tremendous zippiness and lip-smacking acidity. The nose is citrucy in a form of Lemon and orange zest, floral with distinctive chamomile aromas, and a hint of exotic fruits like cantaloupe or dragon fruit. The palate is firm and directional with flavours of fresh pressed Meyer lemon, orange zest, pink grapefruit, pear, quince and a great deal of flinty minerality on the finish. A light hint of white pepper can also be found at the end of this very lengthy finish. On the second day, the zippy and citrucy personality opens up and become more textural and generous showing lemon cream and lemon custard. The progression and the evolution on the second day were so impressive that I adjusted the score a half point up for this exciting quality. A spectacular wine and arguably the best Chenin Blanc in the country. (Carl Boucher, July 25, 2023).

2023 Da Silva “Hidden Hollow Vineyard” Fumé Blanc - Carl's Wine Club

2022 Da Silva “Hidden Hollow Vineyard” Fume Blanc
BC, Okanagan Valley, VQA Naramata Bench
100% Sauvignon Blanc | Dry | 12.7% ABV
92+pts Carl's Wine Club

Bright, fleshy, with lively minerality, this Fume Blanc is right in line with the previous vintage. A fantastic expression of the Hidden Hollow Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. Aromas include lime, lemon twist, orange blossom, grapefruit, passionfruit and oak spices. The palate is soft but energetic, the oak is delicate in flavour but efficient in texture, and the length is impressive. Flavours of fresh lemon intertwine with grassiness and passion fruits while a welcomed vanilla and lemon meringue component fill the mid palate. The finish is bright and offers light spices, probably developed by the toasted oak barrels, and the minerality highlights this wine while taking the finish to the next level. This is a snapshot of the great potential of the 2022 vintage for white wines in British Columbia. This wine is spectacular! Tasted first in February 2024 and re-tasted in June 2024.344 cases made. (Carl Boucher, June 15, 2024).

2020 Da Silva Syrah-Malbec | Wine Club Member Exclusive - Carl's Wine Club

2020 Da Silva Syrah-Malbec

🔥 Wine Club Exclusive
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
55% Syrah, 45% Malbec | Dry | 14.1% ABV
91pts Carl’s Wine Club

This wine has evolved gracefully and improved drastically since I tasted a year ago! The wine went from good to great, which can indicate a glorious next few years for this wine if this keeps improving at this rate. Definitely a spectacular BBQ option! (CWC update, 22/07/2023).I like the almost equal split of Syrah and Malbec in this very unique wine. The structure is impressive with bright acidity on full display, well-rounded, with jammy fruits. The nose is generous with aromas of dark plum, cassis, tobacco, licorice and cedar. The palate starts with a wave of vanilla followed by dark and blue fruits dominated by blueberry jam and blackberry. The mid palate is dense and packed with flavours of licorice, dark cocoa, clove and toasty spices. The back palate is long and tenacious with a stunning peppery finish which sustains and supports the snappy tannins. If you like obvious oak, crack this wine in its youth, and if you like moderate oak, wait a few years! 30min of decanting is recommended. (Carl Boucher, November 14, 2022).

2020 Da Silva Merlot - Carl's Wine Club

2019 Da Silva Merlot
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Merlot | Dry | 14.3% ABV
91pts Carl’s Wine Club

Rich and smooth, but balanced and fresh, this medium+ body Merlot perfectly profiles the star power and potential of this grape varietal in the Okanagan, especially from the Naramata Bench and the Penticton area. The nose is very expressive with aromas of dark cherry, blue plum, black olives, licorice, dark chocolate and freshly chopped herbs. On the palate, the flavours offer sweet blue fruits like blueberry, plum and cassis, well supported by a fresh acidity which helps lift the mid palate and the earthy and herbaceous components. The finish highlighted the readiness of the wine with soft and enjoyable tannins, chewy tobacco leaves and oak spices. A rea classic Naramata Bench Merlot. 194 cases made.. (Carl Boucher, November 21, 2022).

2020 Da Silva Pinot Noir - Carl's Wine Club

2021 Da Silva Pinot Noir 🔥 Less than 4 cases left!
BC, VQA Okanagan Valley
100% Pinot Noir | Dry wine | 13.9% ABV
🔥 93pts Carl's Wine Club

From the Blenheim Hill vineyard on the Naramata Bench and the Lazy Dog vineyard on the Penticton West Bench, this Pinot Noir was aged in a mix of French (60%) and Hungarian oak (40%) for a total of 18 months, creating freshness, power, layers, and complexity. Full bodied but well balanced, powerful but refined, this win has it all. On the nose, aromas of licorice, red and black cherry, blue plum, cedar and oak spices define the house style of Da Silva wines. The palate is rich, dense and generous, showing continuity with the previous vintages. Flavours of macerated cherry, blueberry, black licorice, mocha, red beet, mushroom and a terrific layer of minerality before hitting some various spice notes.(Carl Boucher, September 3, 2024). 350 cases made.

3L Box Da Silva Rosé
BC, Okanagan Valley
Merlot, Pinot Noir| Dry | 13.4% ABV
90+pts Carl’s Wine Club

Vibrant, expressive and serious, this rosé has so much to offer. A multi-vintage blend of mostly 2022 vintage, with a splash of 2021 (to add softness) and a generous addition of the soon to be released 2023 (to add complexity). On the nose, aromas of orange, strawberry pie, red apple, melon and a hint of fresh herbs like basil and parsley. On the palate, the texture is round and gracious, offering distinctive flavours of fresh squeezed navel orange, field strawberries, peach, fresh guava, and the tartness of a rhubarb stick, which brings precision to this rosé. The finish is long and lively, making this rosé a perfect patio partner, but also serious enough to be a good partner at the dinner table. Keep one in the fridge at all times, the value proposition is just fantastic… (CWC, 04/04/23).

3L Box Da Silva “Pinot Gris - Viognier”
BC, Okanagan Valley
Pinot Gris, Viognier | Dry | 13.1% ABV
90pts Carl's Wine Club

This is a textbook party wine that offers fruitiness and a perfect weight. This white blend of Pinot Gris and Viognier is fresh, versatile and simply delicious. On the nose you get fresh squeezed lime, peach, honey melon, white flowers and a hint of candied lemon peel. The palate is soft but buzzing with energy, delivering a multi-layer experience highlighting a great blend of orchard flavours like peach and crunchy apple, but also mingling with the zippiness of the lemon zest and blood orange . This is mostly 2023 juice, with a small proportion of 2022. All in all, this wine in a box delivers much more than I was anticipating in terms of mouth-feel and complexity, but also in terms of value and bang for your buck. (CWC, May 15, 2024).

3L Box Da Silva “Merlot – Malbec”
BC, Okanagan Valley
Merlot – Malbec | Dry | 14.8% ABV
91pts Carl's Wine Club

Round, fruity and juicy, this is a super approachable red blend and the very first time that I can say that I’m impressed with a wine in a box! This one made me think: wow, that’s exactly what I want😊! The nose is filled with intense aromas and flavours of black currant, bramble fruit, blueberry jam, mocha and smoked grilled sausage, only enhanced by the subtle oak notes of vanilla. You can expect a nice and surprising complexity from this crowd pleaser. The palate expresses freshness, energy and tannic structure while the flavours offer dark fruit expression, a hint of blueberry and cassis, with a burst of expresso coffee just after the mid-palate before finishing on seductive oak spice notes and white pepper. A fantastic expression of the Okanagan Valley… in a box 😊 thank you Richard Da Silva! (CWC, May 15, 2024).

The Story & People

Da Silva Vineyards & Winery is located on the Naramata Bench, near Penticton, BC.

They've made some of our top wines of the year, and I am especially a fan of the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc and Rose. But let's face it: all the wines Richard Da Silva makes are excellent.

His family has been farming the Okanagan since the 1950's and this deep knowledge and respect for the terroir is evident in the wines.

The Kitchen at Da Silva is also one of the very best tables in the Okanagan for tapas and paella. An absolute must if you're in the area!

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Da Silva this week and consider their wines. We send the Da Silva family and all their staff our very best during the difficulties they've faced - and hope to see them bounce back quickly!

Cheers to you and your Da Silva wine discoveries!

Carl

The Da Silva family story begins in 1955 when the first members of the family first immigrated from Portugal to the Naramata Bench with only a suitcase in hand.

From these humble beginnings, they bought their first family farm in 1959. Today, Da Silva Vineyards & Winery continues the family farming tradition with a deep-rooted connection and respect for place.

Vigneron Richard Da Silva brings a lifetime of studying and understanding of the diversity of the Okanagan terroir and its influence on wine.

His passion and experience is palpable as he creates small lot wines reflective of the personalities of each vineyard he tends to using low interventions techniques and extended cellar aging.
