Jessica and Alison Oppenlaender grew up in the vineyard. Their dad Matthias left Germany in 1984 at 22 years old and planted 40 acres in Queenston, right under the Escarpment, at a time when nearly everyone told him vinifera would never survive an Ontario winter.

He was wrong about nothing.

Forty years later that family farms some of the best single vineyard sites in Niagara, and for most of those years the fruit went into other people's bottles. Liebling is the sisters putting their own name on it at last. 

The name means darling in German. It is what their oma called their dad when she was encouraging him to chase this whole crazy idea from 6,000 kilometres away.

The wines are made at Collab Wine & Beverage alongside Jeff Moote, which means every dollar goes into the fruit instead of a tasting room.

Here's what struck me with Liebling wines. These are premium, single vineyard wines from land this family has walked for four decades. BUT not one of them is priced like it.
