Canadian wines punching way above their price point

John Marynissen and his family planted Cab Sauv in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1976, long before Canada had a world class wine industry. 50 years later, those vineyards are still producing some of Canada's most compelling wines.

2024 Marynissen Eh?! Cab Franc Riesling 🔥92pts

$27.95

A truly intriguing wine and possibly one of the most interesting bottles I’ve tasted this year. This is the sequel of the very popular blend of Merlot and Gewurztraminer we featured couple of years ago.

This co-fermented blend of 71% Cabernet Franc and 29% Riesling carries just 3.5 g/L of residual sugar, giving it a subtle roundness while staying bright and lively. At first the concept sounds unusual, but in the glass the two varietals mesh surprisingly well.

The Cabernet Franc leads the aromatic profile with crushed raspberry, cranberry, and layers of stewed strawberry. As the wine opens, the Riesling side emerges with lime, lemon, and a touch of flinty minerality that lifts the wine through the mid-palate and into the finish.

The result is playful, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Curious and unique without ever feeling strange or gimmicky.

A wine to discover, and a bottle that will absolutely surprise your guests. (Carl Boucher, March 2, 2026).

2024 Marynissen "Picone Vineyard" Riesling | 🔥92pts

$22.95

This single-vineyard Riesling comes from the Picone Vineyard, a fantastic source of fruit in Niagara, especially for Riesling. The vineyard is located in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation, near Sue-Ann Staff Winery.

What stands out immediately is the texture and balance. There’s a beautiful harmony between gentle sweetness and bright acidity, but the best attribute of this wine is just how easy it is to drink. Absolutely delicious.

On the nose you’ll find floral notes, plenty of peach and white peach, ripe apricot, yellow poached apple, and even a hint of star fruit.

On the palate, green apple sits right at the center, surrounded by white peach, yellow apple, tangerine and a touch of tropical fruit. And the finish is what really seals it for me: a subtle flinty note, that classic Niagara mineral edge that adds complexity while keeping the wine incredibly approachable.

Fantastic value and a really enjoyable Riesling. (Carl Boucher, March 12, 2026).

2023 Marynissen "Heritage Collection" Stouck Vineyard Viognier | 90pts

$24.95

Also 90pts Rick Van Sickle

Single-vineyard Viognier from the Stouck Vineyard in the Lincoln Lakeshore appellation, farmed by the same family for now six generations. A wonderful source of grape.

This 2023 is beautifully balanced, with great texture and surprisingly lively acidity for the variety. Viognier can sometimes feel heavy, but this one stays fresh and energetic, finishing with a nice mineral edge.

The nose shows tropical and ripe orchard fruit — peach, nectarine, honeysuckle, apricot and a hint of melon — along with light floral and spice notes.

On the palate, the wine is rich and creamy but nicely controlled, avoiding the thick, oily and heavy style Viognier can sometimes show. Flavours of poached pear, ripe peach, nectarine and even fresh pineapple lead into a long flinty finish with a touch of white spice and white pepper.

Excellent value around $25 and a very complete expression of Niagara Viognier. (Carl Boucher, March 12, 2026).

2022 Marynissen Cabernet Franc | 91+pts | Limited Release

$18.95

A very pleasant surprise and arguably the best value wine of this feature. Another reminder of just how well Cabernet Franc performs in Niagara, especially in a vintage like 2022.

The nose is expressive with a New World delivery, showing cherry, cranberry, crushed raspberry, alongside chocolate and a hint of tobacco.

On the palate, the wine is rich, juicy, and perfectly balanced, with flavours of red pepper jelly, blueberry, and crushed raspberry, finishing with a touch of dark chocolate. the tannis are present but soft and enjoyable.

What impressed me most is the weight through the mid-palate. For a wine at $19, this wine almost comes across more serious than it should be... in a good and surprising way.

Outstanding value and a very, could be in the running for value wine of the year. Only 9 cases available. (Carl Boucher, March 6, 2026).

A very fun wine to taste. Friendly, approachable, fruit-driven, and very well priced. And for under $20, this is awesome!

The nose opens with blue and red fruit — blueberry sauce, blue plum, red currant, and a touch of cassis — with a hint of chocolate and smoky tobacco developing in the glass.

On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with bright fruit layered alongside chocolate and a touch of vanilla. The finish carries a pleasant lingering spice that adds just enough complexity. This is a friendly, easy-drinking Syrah that’s perfect for stocking the cellar when you need a reliable party wine that people will enjoy.

Great value and very approachable! (Carl Boucher, March 6, 2026).

2022 Marynissen "Heritage Collection" Nanny's Blend🔥92+pts

$27.95

A very impressive wine for $28. This Merlot–Malbec blend comes together beautifully, delivering a style that is bold and surprisingly lifted from great level of acidity.

The nose leans strongly toward the Malbec, with aromas of black plum, blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and pipe tobacco. The Merlot adds a savoury layer, bringing subtle notes of freshly grind coffee and depth.

On the palate, the wine is rich with excellent texture for the price. The wine spent 16 months in French and American oak, which is now very well integrated at four years of age.

Flavours of black plum, dark cherry, cassis, and black currant dominate, with accents of chewwy tobacco and dark chocolate. The finish brings a touch of Christmas spice and Asian spice from the barrel, along with a hint of white pepper. I quite like the presence of the tannins as well; they give the wine a slightly more serious profile at this stage.

At just 12.5% alcohol, it shows a little bigger than expected while still maintaining freshness. A flavourful red and again, an excellent value wine from a great producer. (Carl Boucher, March 6, 2026).

2022 Marynissen "Heritage Collection" Cabernet-Syrah🔥92pts Exclusive Release

$27.95

Member Price: $22

This is a very exciting wine. I’ve been pounding the table for years hoping to see more blend like this on the market.

Roughly 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Syrah, and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged 18 months in French and American oak, with a good portion of new barrels.

The nose delivers dark berries, dark cherry, blackcurrant, sweet tobacco, sage, pencil lead cocoa, and cedar.

On the palate, the wine is rich and precise and savoury, with beautifully integrated oak and slightly rugged tannins that give it a bit of structure.

The Syrah really shines through on the mid-palate, bringing a subtle smoky, meaty character, while the dark fruit remains the backbone of the wine. Toward the finish, the profile shifts slightly toward graphite and pencil lead, adding complexity, with barrel spice lingering on the back end.

With member pricing bringing this bottle to $22 including tax, this wine is a real steal and the kind of bottle that would make a fantastic “buy by the case” style wine. give it a quick decant, it makes a nice difference. (Carl Boucher, March 6, 2026).

Gold, 92pts Wine Align, 92pts Natalie Maclean

From the spectacular 2020 vintage, this Merlot from Marynissen does not disappoint. It is a barrel selection of some of the very best Merlot across Niagara-on-the-Lake, aged 16 months in new and used French barrique.

The result is fantastic.

The nose offers aromas of dark plum, cassis, and blackcurrant, layered with sweet tobacco, cedar, and a hint of black licorice. There’s also a subtle touch of volatile acidity (VA) that lifts the aromatics slightly and adds an extra layer of complexity without becoming distracting.

On the palate, the wine is soft and polished, carrying enough acidity and structure to age beautifully. The oak is well integrated, and the flavours lean heavily toward dark fruit, especially blackcurant and black cherry, with layers of chocolate adding richness ans paices adding lenght and complexity. The finish is long and impressive, maybe my favorite aspect of this wine.

With $15 off a bottle, this becomes a fantastic value for a serious Niagara Merlot. this wine can age for another 10 years easily. (Carl Boucher, March 10, 2026).

This wine sits completely on the other side of the spectrum from the 2024 Picone Vineyard Riesling.

While the Picone bottling is soft and gently sweet, the Platinum Series is laser-focused. It’s energetic, directional, and driven by mouth-watering acidity. Bone dry, with just 1 gram of residual sugar. The fruit comes from a star-studded lineup of vineyards across Niagara: Grimsby Hillside, Picone Vineyard, the Marynissen Estate, and Hanck Vineyard.

On the nose, you’ll find wildflower and intense citrus — lime, lemon, and grapefruit — all well integrated around a core of graphite, seashell, and flinty minerality.

The palate reflects the nose beautifully: flint, lemon, lime, and a touch of pear, with some lees aging that adds texture through the mid-palate and into the finish. a very spectacular finish, that lingers for a very long time.

This is a Riesling that still benefits from a little more time in the cellar. It’s slightly austere right now, but very much true to its style and already showing great potential.

A serious, mineral-driven Niagara Riesling that’s absolutely worth getting your hands on.(Carl Boucher, March 12, 2026).
