With an extra year of resting in bottle since my last tasting of it, this wine is now starting to show its real personality, walking right in the footsteps of the 2018 older brother (that I gave 94pts to). The precision and definition of flavours in this wine is absolutely remarkable, reaching a near perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. On the nose, there is the undeniable aroma of lemon, lime, ginger, jasmine tea and a spark of flint. The palate if filed with energy and tension, delivering a gracious mix of zesty and confit citrus, green apple, pear, lemongrass and pickled ginger. The finish is flinty and stony, reflecting the amazing site of the Robert's Block in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appelation. This wine should age gracefully for another decade. Sadly, no Robert’s Block Rieslings where produced in 2020, 2021 or 2022. Get this one while you can!

This is the best Riesling I have tasted this year (2021), not even close: incredible depth with superb freshness and complexity. The wine opens up with aromas of chamomile and ripe lemon while getting a hint of pineapple. There is a spectacular minerality and the very high acidity counters the residual sugar to almost a bone-dry finish. Flavours of citrus and green apple are dominant but not to discount the ginger, honeycomb and stone fruit. The outstanding texture and never-ending finish are two features taking this wine to the next level. Serve chilled for freshness and cellar temperature for extreme complexity with a meal. I’m already looking forward to the next vintage…. WOW. (CWC, 10/2021). 200 cases made.

This classic Riesling exudes notes of petrol and minerals and has a silky, rich texture. It is nicely balanced and has a beautiful long finish. The style is slightly off dry, offering mouth-watering notes of honeyed lime citrus, tangerine and peach. The mid-palate is riche and offers appropriate weight for a 13 years old Riesling but also have held on to an appropriate amount of acidity, which bring vibrancy and precision. The finish is extremely long and display a good amount of crunchy ginger, lingering spices and slight oxidation undertone, which is totally appropriate for a wine that age. The flinty minerality is off-the-charts… a serious wine from a serious vintage, for an incredible price-point! (CWC, 02/2022).

This wine was the clear favourite and the highest rated Riesling from International Riesling Day 2022. With a stunning 95pts, this wine displayed maturity, balance and complexity at a level that I rarely experience. The sugar level has integrated throughout the years leaving behind any heavy and sweet flavours. The slight petroleum has a proper place, the weight is at a perfect level, and the flinty minerality is shining. The flavours of blood orange, apricot, key lime and Meyer lemon are dominant and well-integrated with lavender honey and apple crumble. This wine continued to evolve for a good 5 hours, making for great conversations and a lengthy sensory experience. (CWC, 02/2022).

This entry level Riesling has the perfect price point to provide value for everyone who would like to enter the complex world of Riesling. On the nose, you’ll find slight notes of petrol, Meyer lemon, honey melon, peach, lilac and loads of flinty minerality. On the palate, I appreciate the silky, rich texture. The style is slightly off dry, offering mouth-watering notes of ripe and juicy lime, lemon sorbet, tangerine, peach, crunchy ginger and a hint of white pepper. The finish displays a good amount of stony minerality, which is a classic from the Twenty-mile Bench sub-appellation, where the Riesling vineyard is located. I love the versatility and the approachability of this wine. (CWC, 02/2022). 600 cases made.

The Story & People
Sue-Ann's winery is located on the Niagara Escarpment, in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation.
Sue-Ann's wines stood out remarkably for us amongst many others when we did our first varietal marathons. Then, we met Sue-Ann herself, and we understood why the wines are so good. She is full of passion, dedication to her craft, talent, and personality to pull through the hard work and bring her dreams to reality.
The place is also special, of course. Erosion from the several streams that cross the sub-appellation have produced a gentle, undulating landscape with many shallow east- and south-facing slopes, unique within the Niagara Peninsula. This sub-appellation delivers fantastic Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc.
I also think it is important to note that members voted Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery our 2022 Winery of the Year! Out of over 40 wineries discovered together that year, Sue-Ann's wines and customer service really stand out to members.
