Discover Vineland Estates on the Niagara Escarpment, Ontario
Some wineries write history. Others are history.
Vineland Estates is one of the true OGs of Canadian wine.
Tucked into the slopes of the Niagara Escarpment since 1979, this estate has been leading the charge for Canadian Riesling and Cabernet Franc for over four decades.
From their iconic St. Urban Vineyard to their newly revived Mission Vineyard, the story of Vineland is one of resilience, vision, and a winemaker with both heart and grit.
And that winemaker? Brian Schmidt.
A man who has shaped VQA Ontario, championed cool climate wine across the country, and earned the nickname “the Indiana Jones of Wine” for his adventurous, fearless leadership.
This week, I’m beyond excited to share one of the best-value Discovery Packs of the year:
✔️ 6 bottles for under $130 tax in
✔️ Rare library releases
✔️ First-ever release from Mission Vineyard
You’ll taste Niagara history in every glass—plus, you’ll feel the passion and purpose that make Vineland one of the most inspiring wineries in the country.
Cheers,
Carl Boucher

Vineland Estate
2023 Vineland Chardonnay Musqué - Mission Vineyard | 91pts | New Release!
91
- ON VQA Niagara Peninsula
- 100% Chardonnay Musqué
A fantastic wine, by a fantastic winemaker, with a seriously fantastic ethos behind it. The tiny 'Mission Vineyard' was revived with inspiration from winemaker Brian Schmidt's grandfather's vineyard in Kelowna, going back 50 years. The proceeds from this vineyard also allow Brian and his wine to fund a charitable farm project that feeds a community in Haiti. This 100% stainless steel Chard Musqué with blow you away with it's florality, flavour definition and easy going personality. On the palate, ripe fruit including yellow apple, meyer lemon, a hint of grilled pineapple and a slight salinity that enhances the finish and makes this much more than a simple Summer wine. The level of complexity for a first-ever vintage is surprising and I can't wait to see the progression of this small-batch, single-vineyard wine. Talk about fantastic Quality-Price-Ratio (QPR) alongside an unforgettable story! (Carl Boucher, August 13, 2025).

2023 Vineland Sauvignon Blanc | 90pts
90
- ON VQA Niagara Peninsula
- 85% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Riesling
What a surprising and intriguing wine...it really won me over fast. A rare 15% Riesling added to this Sauv Blanc takes it to the next level. Bright, crisp, unoaked and mouth watering! Aromas of grapefruit, white flowers and peach reminds you of Summer, Summer, Summer. The palate is fresh and expressive and absolutely delivers on the nose, and more. The Riesling comes through past the mid-palate which makes it very exciting. The finish is very long and impressive for a $22 including tax wine. Nicely done. (Carl Boucher, August 13, 2025).

2023 Vineland Cabernet Franc | 375ml | 91+pts
91.5
- ON VQA Niagara Peninsula
- 100% Cabernet Franc
Wow! We have a lead contender for Top Value Wine of the Year! Surprise, surprise, this exceptional value Cab Franc is made by Mr. Cab Franc himself, winemaker Brian Schmidt at Vineland. And even more exciting? It comes in a convenient half-size bottle at only $10 all in, perfect for those times when you don't want to open a full bottle, or you're going on a picnic, or as a gift. Aromas of red cherry, red currant, rose petals, and red pepper. The palate is already soft and smooth with flavours of black forest cake, milk chocolate, baking spices, and sweet black currants. Approachable, layered, expressive...just a perfect crowd pleaser and exactly what you want to have on hand for Tuesday night pizza or a baked ravioli whenever.

NV Vineland Pinots | 91pts
91pts
- VQA Ontario
- 84% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir, 1% Gamay
Dry | 12.0% ABV | Drink from 2025 to 2028
A bright, approachable, cheerful wine that delivers beautiful acidity, multiple layers with surprising complexity. Pinot Meunier is a rare grape varietal usually produced in Champagne for sparkling wines but can also thrive on it's own when planted on the right site. This blend of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir (with a dash of Gamay) is unique and the result is extremely satisfying. The nose is expressive with aromas of fresh crushed raspberry, violets, and a hint of leather, red cherry and mint. The palate delivers flavours of raspberry, strawberry, tart cherry, rhubarb - meanwhile a tart finish highlights earthy tones and brings all the components together for a well structured wine. The added bonus? It's extremely unique and fun.
Dry | 12.0% ABV | Drink from 2025 to 2028
Pairings: smoked duck prosciutto, grilled portobello mushroom

Vineland Estate
2023 Vineland Elevation St. Urban Riesling 🔥 93pts
93pts
- ON VQA Niagara Escarpment
- 100% Riesling
St. Urban Vineyard is where the Riesling story started in our country - with vines that are now around 40 years old. On the nose, classic Niagara Riesling notes with slight petroleum and blended with ripe peach, lemon curd, and white flowers. The palate is soft and round, offering an incredible balance between sweetness and acidity. Both components meet at the perfect spot, and there's just so much complexity. Flavours of peach, pear, green apple and lime, followed by that stony minerality that's a signature of the St. Urban Vineyard. I'd like to define the 2023 vintage for this wine as serious but seriously approachable too, with fantastic aging potential. (Carl Boucher, August 13, 2025). 93pts Carl's Wine Club | 93pts Natalie MacLean

Vineland Estate
2022 Vineland Elevation Cabernet "Bo-Teek Vineyard" | 92pts
92
- ON VQA Niagara Escarpment
- 85% Cab Franc, 15% Cab Sauv
Cab Franc is far and beyond the king varietal of the challenging 2022 vintage, and it truly shines in this wine. I would go further to say this: the quality rivals the famed 2020 vintage. It does it in a very different way though. 2020 was big and plush, while 2022 is structured and precise. Nose of dark raspberry, espresso coffee, blackcurrant, and graphite. The palate is linear, showcasing bright acidity with sticky tannins. Flavours of dark red berries, mocha, a hint of mint, and a wonderful line of stony minerality on the next-level finish. This wine is built to age for a decade or more, and I like the subtle oak presence that softens it enough to drink beautifully now too.
Dry | 13.5% ABV | Drink from 2025 to 2032
Pairings: slow cooked beef bourgignon, venison tartar

- 65% Cab Franc, 35% Cab Sauv
This wine shouldn't exist anymore. But some was discovered in the Vineland warehouse and Carl's Wine Club is the happy recipient of this treasure. OMG. $19.95 all in for this six year old wine that's aging beautifully...what a deal!!! While Vineland tends to produce modern style reds, this 2019 is much more old world Bordeaux-esque. More earthiness, more herbaciousness, low alcohol and firm tannins (at this stage) which is impressive and exciting. While the nose is on dark fruits and herbaciousness, the palate delivers softness in the opening, tannins and complexity on the back end. Highlighted by flavours of blackcurrant, dark cherries, oak spice and Mediterranean herbs. If you get this bottle, you're up for a treat in the next couple of years! Only 10 cases available.

The Story Behind Vineland
Some wineries are born from passion. Vineland Estates was born from bold vision.
In 1979, before Niagara was known for premium wine, German nurseryman Hermann Weis planted Riesling vines on this site to prove that vinifera could thrive in Ontario’s climate. The skeptics shook their heads. The vines thrived. And history was made.
From those first 40 acres, Vineland Estates has grown into one of Canada’s most respected wine estates — its vineyards rolling across the Niagara Escarpment, its iconic 1877 log barn welcoming wine lovers, and its cellar producing world-class Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier.
Over the decades, Vineland has been more than a winery. It has been a teacher, a benchmark, and a beacon for Canadian wine. Its restaurant ranks among the Top 20 Winery Restaurants in the World, offering local cuisine paired with the wines that helped put Niagara on the global map.
Today, Vineland Estates is one of the true originals — carrying forward that pioneering spirit with every bottle.
👨🌾 Meet the Winemaker: Brian Schmidt
Brian Schmidt is more than a winemaker—he’s one of the great builders of Canadian wine. For over three decades, Brian has been the steady hand and passionate heart behind Vineland Estates Winery, where he has crafted some of Niagara’s most celebrated wines.
Born and raised in Kelowna, BC, Brian grew up on his family’s vineyard—one of the founding families of the Okanagan wine industry. That early start gave him a deep understanding of what makes vines and terroir thrive. In 1992, he came east to Niagara to join his brother Allan at Vineland Estates, and since then has helped shape both the winery’s reputation and the direction of Ontario wine itself.
As a long-time leader of VQA Ontario (Vintners Quality Alliance), Brian has been instrumental in setting the standards that ensure Canadian wines stand proudly on the world stage. His passion for cool-climate varieties like Riesling and Cabernet Franc has not only earned him countless awards, but has made these grapes cornerstones of Ontario’s global reputation.
But Brian’s impact extends far beyond the vineyard. Known as the “Indiana Jones of Wine,” he’s a tireless philanthropist with a deep commitment to community, both at home and abroad. Through his work with the Haiti Mission, Brian has helped build homes, schools, and wells, bringing hope and resilience to communities facing overwhelming hardship. His personal vineyard, the Mission Vineyard, was named in honor of this cause—its proceeds supporting ongoing projects in Haiti.
Humble, driven, and endlessly curious, Brian Schmidt is a winemaker who believes great wine isn’t just about what’s in the glass—it’s about the story, the land, and the people it connects. His wines, especially the world-class Rieslings and Cabernet Francs from Vineland’s historic vineyards, are more than bottles to open; they’re part of a legacy.
