Burnt Ship Bay
Top Value Wine of the Year: 2020 Burnt Ship Bay “Reserve” Red | 92pts
92pts
- Ontario VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake
- 52% Merlot 35% Cab Franc, 13% Malbec
Another outstanding value Red, this time showcasing the stunning 2020 vintage and with added barrel aging time. This wine could easily be in the $30 category, and yet it remains in the under $25 category. It’s shocking to see such a great wine for just around a green bill. This wine is fantastic cellar insurance for drinkers of big reds. Heavy on Cabernet Franc, the aromas of this wine offer ripe raspberry, dark cherry, cassis, dark chocolate and cigar box, all well-defined, clear and precise, announcing a hot and long developing vintage. The palate is rich and bold, showing depth and concentration. Flavours of dark cherry, raspberry jam, blueberry liquor, dark chocolate, vanilla and chewy tobacco leaves are well melted together to bring a now homogenous wine, hitting its peak NOW. The finish is very impressive and long, offering white pepper, oak spices and lengthy soft tannins. These kinds of well-rounded wines are not usually available at this price point. Very impressive. (CWC, Jan 15-2024).
Dry 3.0g/L |14.5% ABV | Drink from 2028 to 2024
Pairings: slow cooked beef stew and root vegetables, juicy BBQ baby-back ribs

Burnt Ship Bay
2023 Burnt Ship Bay Sauvignon Blanc | 91pts
91pts
- Ontario, VQA Niagara Peninsula
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Dry | RS3.0g/L | 12.0% ABV | Drink from to 2027
This tangy and zesty Sauvignon Blanc re-defines the notion of over delivering. I mean, this wine has all the characteristics of a classic “New World” Sauvignon Blanc with a price-point that will please all types of white wine drinkers. This wine delivers enough complexity to make you wonder WHY it’s so well priced 😊. On the nose, you can expect pungent aromas of citrus and tropical fruits like lime, pineapple and guava but also a hint of fresh cut grass to remind you of the New World influence. The palate is shockingly round and suave delivering flavours of pineapple, yellow apple, pink grapefruit, pomelo, and passion fruit. The finish hangs around and delivers a satisfying level of freshness, topped with a hint of minerality, which helps to add to its complexity level. Buy it by the case…. (CWC, Jan 15-2024).
Dry 3.0 12.0% ABV | Drink from to 2027

Burnt Ship Bay
2024 Burnt Ship Bay Pinot Grigio | New Release!
Not Yet Rated
- Ontario, VQA Niagara Peninsula
- 100% Pinot Grigio
Winery Notes: This Pinot Grigio is a delightful and refreshing wine that perfectly complements summer days on the patio or gatherings with friends at the cottage. On the nose, it reveals notes of stone fruit characteristics, revealing aromas of white peaches, orange blossom, and lemongrass. On the palate, this Pinot Grigio showcases a bright acidity that enlivens the senses, layered with flavours of cantaloupe and peaches, offering a burst of juicy and fresh fruitiness. The wine concludes with a long mineral finish, leaving a crisp and invigorating impression.
RS 2.0g/L | 12.5% ABV | Drink from 2025 to 2027

About Burnt Ship Bay & Bella Terra Vineyards

It's rare that I find wines under $20 including tax that I consider to be great value for the price, which is why we were so thrilled to find Burnt Ship Bay.
Burnt Ship Bay was started by Marcel Morgenstern and Lou Puglisi, the same duo who you may recognize from Bella Terra Vineyards (our #1 Member's Choice Winery of the Year in 2021). Hence they've also given us access to a super rare vertical of Cab Sauv from Bella Terra.
Bella Terra has a long and storied history in Niagara reaching back to the 1970s, but it was in 2014 that Grape King Lou Puglisi joined forces with talented winemaker Fred DiProfio to start their own winery. Together they also make the wines for Burnt Ship Bay.
I hope you enjoy these quality everyday drinking wines, and their affordable price points!
And if you can get a vertical of Cab Sauv, it's the perfect way to experience what Niagara has to offer for this big varietal over time.
Cheers,
Carl
