You'll be glad you crossed this path!
Ever wondered why wine lovers obsess over dirt?
Let’s go to the Golden Mile Slopes near Oliver, BC, home to Intersection Winery and Canada's only desert. Known for exceptional Rhône whites (perhaps the best Marsanne I have tasted from Canada, ever), cellar-worthy Riesling, and bold reds, including some of BC’s very best Merlot, this winery showcases the magic of terroir.
Now more on that dirt.
Their Silica and Alluvia Merlots are a masterclass in how soil transforms wine. Same vineyard, same varietal, same winemaker, same harvest date—yet completely different wines, all thanks to the dirt on two sides of the vineyard!
Of course, all the wines from Intersection are terroir-driven, and a great intro to the Golden Mile Slopes VQA Sub-Geographical Indicator.
I rated these beauties 90 to 94 points, and we have access to back vintages and exclusive releases.

2021 Intersection "Alluvia" Unfiltered Merlot 🔥 93+pts
- 93.5pts
- BC Okanagan Valley VQA Golden Mile Slopes
- 100% Merlot
It’s hard to believe that this is the twin brother of the 2021 Silica Merlot! Same vintage, same vineyard, same harvest date, same oak treatment, same winemaker. Different results. This wine is very fascinating! Despite the 15.2% alcohol, this wine feels much lighter on it’s feet, much lengthier, and much more complex than the 2021 Silica. The grapes for this wine and the Silica are harvested from two sides of the same vineyard, with very different soil composition. While Silica provides a New World profile, Alluvia reminds me much more of the Old World. On the nose, stunning aromas of black cherry, black currants, black licorice, wet forest floor, and herbal notes. The palate reflects the aromas with the addition of sweet tobacco leaves, charcoal like sensations on the finish, and long and lingering white pepper. The oak is very well integrated here, and I believe that the aging potential is a little greater than the Silica counterpart. This is really, really, really, really good…ouf!! (Carl Boucher, January 2, 2025). 285 cases made.
Pairings: veal shank, jambalaya or spicy Spanish sausages

2021 Intersection "Silica" Unfiltered Merlot | 92pts
- 92pts
- BC Okanagan Valley VQA Golden Mile Slopes
- 100% Merlot
Terroir lovers, take note! Silica is the brother to Alluvia, two Merlots made by Intersection showcasing two sides of the same vineyard. The soils on the Silica side of the vineyard are sandier, while the Alluvia soils are rockier. For 2021, Silica displays a New World profile with big and bold fruits and expressive tannins. Fermented in tanks for 4 weeks, this wine was transferred to French oak barrels for a lengthy 18 months, highlighted with 30% new barriques. The nose is black cherry, blackberry, cassis, blueberry jam, mocha and tobacco. The palate is round, expressive, and muscular, offering notes of dark fruits like blackberry, black cherry, and black cherry compote, and a bit of dark licorice. The finish is sticky, satisfying, and lingers with a good mix of cloves, black and white pepper, and a little hint of mint. Silica will most likely reach it’s prime before Alluvia for the 2021 vintage. (Carl Boucher, January 2, 2025). 285 cases made.
Pairings: prime rib, slow roasted lamb shoulder
