Every year, members vote for their top winery discovery in BC and Ontario. The very first year we did the Member's Choice Winery of the Year award, a member said "we should throw a party at the winning winery"...and so we did!

The tradition continues as we gear up to vote for our fourth Winery of the Year.

Absolutely WOW. A new addition to the Black Market portfolio, this single-vineyard Merlot comes from the Zoetermeer Vineyard, located just minutes from the winery. On the nose, aromas of red and black fruits, leafy herbs, cedarwood, and earthy white truffle emerge beautifully. Medium to full-bodied, this wine offers a rich, pure, and layered mouthfeel with an elegant texture, solid balance, and outstanding length. The palate unfolds in a stunning sequence of blue plum, cassis, strawberry jam, black currant, dark chocolate, and sweet tobacco leaves, leading to a bold finish with a generous hit of cracked black pepper. The tannins are still sticky and slightly aggressive, but this aspect should soften over the next two years. Give this wine a 30-minute decant, and you’ll experience the pure magic of Okanagan Merlot. (Carl Boucher, February 23, 2025). 85 cases made.

Well-aged and hitting its prime, this nine-year-old Merlot highlights the exceptional potential of this grape varietal in the Okanagan. A blend of Osoyoos and Penticton grapes, it was aged for 12 months in a 50/50 mix of American and French oak. The result is a wine that is soft, smooth, and well-balanced, cerebral enough to make you think, yet perfectly poised between power and elegance. Opens on a complex nose layered with sweet tobacco, savory herbs, star anise and olive notes, with a lovely vein of graphite minerality beneath cassis and plum. The palate is electric, its deceptive power seamlessly integrated into soft, resolved tannins. Black raspberry joins blueberry, while wet slate and iron-rich, soil-driven minerality spill into a long, perfectly balanced finish—serious and hedonistic at the same time. This is “la crème de la crème” of the Da Silva portfolio, a tribute to their farming heritage and their knowledge of the terroir of the Okanagan Valley. The grapes were sourced from three vineyards carefully selected throughout the valley where each of them brings different attributes to the wine. This is the 2019 vintage at its best with a great deal of finesse, elegance and complexity. The nose is expressive and parfumy, offering aromas of blackberry, ripe raspberry, cedar, licorice and pencil shaving. The palate is graciously layered with flavours of blue plum, raspberry, dark cherry and cassis at first before transitioning towards an “Old World” savouriness well integrated with vanilla and dark chocolate. The finish is long and spicy with a defined expression of cloves and white pepper while the tannins are present but already well integrated, which is surprising for a young 2019 wine. The 10 to 12 years of aging potential will reward those who can be patient for this “Okanagan Masterpiece”. (CWC, 10/20/2022). 179 cases made. (re-tasted Dec 28, 2024. This single-vineyard Chenin Blanc has developed a cult following over the last few years. Freshness, energy, minerality, complexity—this wine has it all. The Hidden Hollow Vineyard, located on the Naramata Bench, has become one of the premier sources of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc in the entire Okanagan Valley. The burst of minerality in this wine is likely the main reason for its growing reputation. On the nose, expressive aromas of lemon, lime, honeydew melon, passion fruit, orange peel, and ginger create a seductive and intriguing bouquet—both sexy and compelling. The palate is vibrant and textural, highlighted by flavors of Key lime and meringue pie, layered with notes of orange zest, lemon, and green apple. About Da Silva Vineyards & Winery

The Da Silva family story begins in 1955 when the first members of the family first immigrated from Portugal to the Naramata Bench with only a suitcase in hand.

From these humble beginnings, they bought their first family farm in 1959. Today, Da Silva Vineyards & Winery continues the family farming tradition with a deep-rooted connection and respect for place.

Vigneron Richard Da Silva brings a lifetime of studying and understanding of the diversity of the Okanagan terroir and its influence on wine.

His passion and experience is palpable as he creates small lot wines reflective of the personalities of each vineyard he tends to using low intervention techniques and extended cellar aging. 

Pro tip: if you ever visit the Okanangan, don't miss Da Silva and the on-site restaurant, The Kitchen by Abul Adame. In our opinion, it's the top table in the region.

About Black Market Wine Co.

Fueled by passion...driven by perfection...unconstrained by tradition. That's Black Market Wine Co. based in Kaleden, BC, one of the ‘last frontiers’ of great potential in the Okanagan that is relatively unexplored.

Black Market established their brand with a 2012 vintage, and has grown steadily over the last decade.

I chose this winery to feature because of the strong reputation they have built for small-lot, hand-crafted wines that surpass expectations. 

For many years while still living in Calgary, Black Market owners Rob and Michelle would travel to the Okanagan in search of the small boutique wines that weren’t available in the Alberta market. 

Inevitably, they would fill their car with cases and cases of amazing wines…and “smuggle” them back across the border to share with family and friends. They became known as the Wine Black Marketeers, so when they set up their own winery, choosing the name was easy! 

Rob spent over six years producing wines through BC Wine Studio under the tutelage of an experienced winemaker, and studying viticulture and enology through Washington State University.

In 2019, the couple moved their family of 5 to Kaleden permanently to continue growing Black Market Wine Co. and take their dream of owning a boutique vineyard and winery to the next level.

How does this work?

Carl's Wine Club is Canada's first pan-Canadian, direct-to-consumer wine club.

Being a member of the wine club is FREE and you have access to our informative emails and our live virtual events with Carl to learn more about Canadian wineries.

We feature a different Canadian winery every 1-2 weeks with a specially curated mix of wines. You choose if and how much wine to purchase, with winery direct pricing and shipping deals.

Is the order page secure?

Yes, absolutely! We use a secure website and order page, with all credit card information processed by a PCI-compliant payment processor and bank-grade SSL encryption of your data.

What size bottles will I receive?

All bottles are 750ml (standard wine bottles) unless otherwise noted. There may be a different size bottle for instance for Magnums at 1.5L or smaller bottles for Ice Wines.

How does shipping work?

Shipping of wines is done from the featured winery directly, unless you're ordering a 'Mystery Pack' or other limited edition pack. Shipping is available to Canadian locations only. Shipping is usually completed by Courier, however Canada Post is used for rural or remote locations. You will receive a tracking number from the winery or courier system. Someone over the legal drinking age must be present at the time of delivery and provide ID to the delivery driver (this is a legal requirement). Please do your best to ensure that an adult is available to receive the order on the anticipated delivery date.
